Hi all,

Just a quick question.  I am going for my first iron infusion to-morrow.  I have to get it over 4 afternoons (maintenance dose apparently).

Just wondering will there be any side affects from this.

Not looking forward to it as my veins are not great to get line in.  Am on Remicade every 8 weeks and usually they have terrible trouble with my veins.

I've had venifor, had no side effects from it (except for improved hemoglobin levels).

It's a much faster infusion than Remicade too, only about an hour each time for me.

Hope they get a vein on the first try!

Thanks for that J_web.  It will be a miracle if they get a vein on first go ! !

Ugh, the worst part is when they don't get it on the first go and proceed to dig around with the needle under your skin.

There are some alcohol wipes with pain killer in them, I don't know if they'd help much, but you could pick some up at the pharmacy and give ask the nurse to use one (look in the diabetes section).

Venofer gives me low blood pressure so I can't get them. One time I passed out after the infusion and my pressure was so low that I had no heart rate and they started pumping on my chest (there was no need to of course). When I woke up I was surrounded by doctors since they called a Code Blue. Good times.

So be careful when you stand up, if you don't feel well lie down.

They used to have loads of trouble finding my veins for my Ferrlecit infusions--so occasionally they'd give me what they called the "hot glove" treatment. Which was literally a hot glove. They'd fill a rubber glove with very hot water and have me sit there with it on my hand for a few minutes, hoping that the heat would make my veins pop up and be more visible.

Well I had my iron infusion.  No side affects, but my god my veins.......  eventually after the 4th attempt they managed to get it to stay in.

After 5 venofer infusions early this year, I ended up with a port. It's be the BEST thing in the world!! I've had over 30 infusions this year, and it's SO easy - no digging - get it on the first stick!  So reminding you to keep your options open!
