I got sick and diagnosed this summer. I had my period in June before I got sick and then once in October, and no more since then. I have always been regular with my periods unless I workout too hard or don't eat enough and lose weight too quickly. I don't feel like any of those are the case right now. Does Crohn's itself mess with your menstrual cycle? I'm on Remicade and Methotrexate, but I don't recall seeing anything about that being a side effect. Just curious if you ladies have had similar experiences.

Obviously I need to go to the gynecologist, but I can't get in for a while.

I was diagnosed a year ago in December 2008... I kept getting my period regularly until I went off the pill in July then I didn't get my period again until November when I went back on the pill. I stopped because my naturopath said if I could I should go off it (I don't agree with that now). Also I find that my crohns symptoms get alot worse around my period, so not getting it wasn't so bad! I'm guessing I stopped getting it because I lost weight maybe? Who knows... anyways good luck with figuring out what's going on!

Hmmmm this sounds oddly familiar. I was dxd when I was 12, I started my period when I was 11. When I first started getting sick, they stopped being regular and now, the have disappeared all together! =( I went to a gyno and they said that its just because when your body goes through any kind of trauma such as wieght loss or gain so quickly it tells itself, I couldnt support another life while all this is going on, so you stop menstrating. I still have not had one and I am 20. I am afraid I will not be able to have children but the docs have all assured me that even though I am not ovulating the eggs are still there. I was put on remicade about a year after I was diagnosed, maybe that has something to do with the no period thing? I dont know, but good luck.

Just FYI, but crohn's makes you hypercoagulate (meaning your blood tends to clot quicker than normal), so if you can be off birth control, it is best. Crohn's predisposes us all to have blood clots that can travel to lungs or elsewhere. I wasn't aware of this until I did have blood clots go to my lungs. Neither my GI or GYN told me about this. I only found out from my pulmonologist after the fact. Now I can no longer take birth control and have to be on blood thinners for 6 months.

If you are on birth control to regulate your period or lessen your PMS symptoms, I would suggest being on a low dose one...and NEVER smoke while you're on birth control!

I don't mean to scare you, but doctors obviously don't tell us everything and I wish someone had told me about this before it became a huge issue.

Also...my periods have always been irregular. The only time they have been normal was when I was on the pill.

I have the total opposite situation. I can't get rid of my period. I first got my period when I was 10 and they were totally irregular. When I was 15 i was put on a birth control to regulate it. At 20 I was diagnosed with crohn's and I was still on birth control up until I got pregnant at 22. After I gave birth to my son my crohn's went into a horrible flare and i've been that way ever since. Have not been in a remission in almost 6 yrs. My period though has been a freakin nightmare. I constantly bleed. I have my period for three weeks out of the month. Then i'll stop bleeding for like maybe 6 days, 8 if i'm extremely lucky and it starts all over again. Went to many different gyno's and they all don't know why I bleed this way. Then my hemotologist checked me for von willibrands disease which was negative and also thalasemia(sorry about sp) which is also neg. Gyno checked for polycystic ovarian syndrom-neg; checked hormones-norm; fibroids-neg. Gastro says it's due to the disease and the body being all out of wack from meds. I don't know what to do anymore. It truly sucks to bleed all month long. Anyone having similar siutation as me? HELP!

I wasn't getting my period for years and it drove me crazy at the fact that every dr I mentioned it to wasn't concerned with it. I have been on the pill since age of 16 because back then my periods were so bad and the pill helped them become less severe. It eventually turned into NO periods and to me, that just doesn't seem healthy, but apparently to my Gyno it is perfectly finel. I always assumed it had to do with my Crohn's. I didn't know why exactly but I kind have missed my period. I just recently decided to switch to the pill where you only get your period 3 months out of the year bc I wasn't getting it anyway so its just an easier prescription. I also started Humira around the same time I switched pills. To my suprise I got my period for the first time in AWHILE! Well to say the least I don't miss it anymore - I now remember how bad it was. I wonder though whether the Humira is regulating my body a bit more bc it has my Crohn's under control? Oh and my Crohn's does act up around the time of my period, when I do get it.

I skipped almost a year because of severe weight loss due to CD. Once I started getting better, period came back, normal.
