Hi all,

Just thought I'd see if anyone has experienced this... Last night I started tasting a very bitter, metal/soap taste in my mouth. At first I thought I had touched something and then maybe the fingers in the mouth. But, I cannot remember doing that... And, it's not going away. When I drink anything, especially water or milk, the taste gets worse. I did a quick search and noticed Crohn's come up so I thought I'd see if anyone on here had experience with this... NOTE: I am not on Flagyl, nor have I been in almost a year.

I had something similar not too long ago, too! Mine was brought on by some sort of sinus thing I had going on...not quite a sinus infection...but it gave me the same metallic taste, like flagyl. At first I thought I was going crazy but after an internet search I found it could be caused by a head cold. Mine disappeared after my cold and I haven't had any problems since:)

I know there are a few things that could cause it...but if it doesn't go away, you may want to check with your doc!

Thanks... Sadly I don't have any signs of a cold. It just came on suddenly, so I just hope it goes away. So far, no go. Makes it hard to want to drink, though orange juice doesn't seem to make it worse like water and milk do. I have an appointment with my GI in a week and a half. Hopefully it'll be long gone by then, but if not I will definitely talk it over with him. I'd welcome any other stories... It is similar to the taste I got with Flagyl, but Flagyl just changed the way the food tasted (for me cheese tasted like I'd imagine cardboard to taste!) This actually is a taste that gets worse with certain foods. I cannot even taste milk at all, for example, I just have a very strong metal, stronger than when I'm not ingesting anything.

Well..here are my thoughts based on what I have thought it is when I was experiencing it: acid/bile coming up from the stomach and in some cases I wondered if I had blood somewhere in the esophagus/stomach along with the reflux- it is disgusting isn't it! I do have GERD and no evidence of blood in the scope however I have never had the scope right during the time I was having that taste...

Thanks, Donna. I had read that GERD can cause it. I haven't been dx with it, but I know I've had heartburn lately, which happens sporadicly for me. When you had the taste in your mouth, how long did it last? Were you able to drink milk - was it tolerable? (if you are milk drinker, that is) I have osteoporosis (thanks to steroid use) and try to take in a couple glasses. No way can I drink it now. The taste is intolerable when I drink milk!!!

Many folks with Crohns also have GERD associated with their Crohns. I take Prilosec and it has eased the GERD up. Instead of the milk have you thought of adding Calcium and Vitamin D to your regimen instead. All Crohnies really need these suplements for their bones. Good luck!

I have read/heard that milk increases stomach acid...don't know for sure though. I use lactaid in my cereal and have not had a problem with it- mind you I have trouble with almost everything when I have that taste. I don't suffer from the typical heartburn - it is more silent damage being done. Length of having the taste has varied couple days to a month- depending on how long it took to get acid reflux/damage under control and healing. While waiting to talk to your doc have you tried using tums? it has the calcium and also antacid- I would suggest an antacid without aspartame-I learned the hard way 10yrs ago how toxic it is and JUST realized yesterday that the maalox I have been taking has aspartame...which would explain the really odd symptoms that I have been having that I haven't had for 10 yrs !
My mom also suffers with that taste because of her gerd...it's aweful but if that is what it is for you it should go away when you treat the problem. Hope it eases for you :)

Thanks Nanners - I do take 1200 mg of calcium with 2,000 IU of D. I had to take Calcitriol to bring my vit D up a couple of times in a row. It's *finally* at a good level ...

I will have to discuss with my GI no matter if the taste lasts until my appt. Since I am primarily in my large intestine I've only done a SBFT once and never an endoscopy. (scares me while a colonoscopy is old hat by this time!) Of course I fear that it's now showing signs, but truth is a year or so I went through a month of heartburn and had to take Prilosec a for a month or so. Since it's been back a few times, but l guess it just makes me sad to think it's not *only* in my large intestine.

annod - yes, pretty much everything tastes terrible it's just that some things, mostly drinks, make the taste more pronounced. Water is bad too. I force myself anyway, I don't want to get dehydrated. But, it's weird to note how much taste impacts my intake!

Here's some herbal advice for you.

I read a book on Colostrum which heals and reverses damage from Crohn's disease. Personally,
I use it for immune system and skin. Healing ability is amazing when mixed with hylaronic acid.

Essiac Tea for reversing and healing damage from acid reflux. I've seen it work on several people
I know. The web site for Renee' Cassie is amazing.

Instead of Flagyl which can do a lot of damage to you including causing cancer check into
Usnea. It's fermented tree litchen. I've suffered chronic yeast infections even though I don't
use antibiotics or a lot of sugar products. It's the only thing I cannot find in pill form. It tastes
yucky so I slug cold water after it but it works much better than acididephollis or anything else
I've tried over the years. I used flagyl many years and then after the fact the dr said it can
cause kidney and liver damage.

Nana Monster, I know you from the Fibro forum. I will tell you with Crohns, Flagyl sometimes is just one of those necessary evils we must deal with as it is needed with our disease.

I was on Flagyl for 5 years before the dr said he couldn't give it to me anymore because of the long term
side effects. I started acidephollis but every now and then I still had problems. My son gave me a new
herbal book for X-mas one year and it had Usnea in it. I contracted a trich infection which was so bad
it was eating my insides. The Usnea cured the infection and healed the damage from it.

If you Google Usnea you will find a web site called "Usnea- immune system tonic-nourishing lichen-
medicinal plant". It has a good write-up on the plant.

If your immune system is compromised because of your disease or medications you can develop a very bad taste in your
mouth. I could not taste food or water it tasted like metal. At the time I was taking remicade and pedinsone. What meds are you
taking mow? Fruitcake
