My GI has finally scheduled a CT scan for me on Jan. 25th. I have got to the point that I need to know what is going on in there, even if it is nothing at the moment. I really do think that in 5 years 1 scan is not going to be so bad. There is so much anti CT scan press at the moment that it does make me pause, but still...

I was wondering how long it takes. I am having the contrast one, so I have to be there an hour early. I just need to know if I need to make plans for my son after school. Can someone give me a rough idea. I know each hospital may have different timelines. Thanks.

Depends on whether they are having you start drinking the contrast at home. Usually they have you drink two bottles of contrast and one glass of water w/an hour between each.

I pick the contrast up and drink the first bottle at home 2 hours before the scan is scheduled, I drink the second one just as I leave the house and they hand me the water to drink when I walk in the door. By the time they take me to the back and have me change into a gown, etc. my gut is ready for the scan and we begin. The scan itself takes maybe 15-20 minutes. By the time I'm dressed and ready to leave they have the CD of the images ready for me. And I'm out the door.

The first CT scan we did they had me come in to drink the bottles of contrast and water there. I'm NOT good about sitting around waiting for some procedure so I had a good talk w/them the next time I was scheduled for a CT scan and we worked out the above arrangement.

My most recent scan was drinking prior to the procedure. They took me back and I swear I was in and out within 30 minutes. The only set back I had was a few needed trips to the bathroom. For some reason it never settles well and goes right through me.

My outpatient CT scans have all gone very quickly. Get there 1.5 hours early to drink the delicious contrast, then get called back and I'm done in about 20 minutes.
