I had my period once in the last six months of being diagnosed. My husband and I would like to try to have kids sometime this year. I went to my gynecologist and she had me on a 10 day course of pills to hopefully make me have my period. It hasn't happened yet, and if it doesn't happen in the next couple days, she wants me to go on a month's worth of birth control pills to see if that starts things up again.

I've never been on birth control before, and I'm a bit afraid to take them. For those of you who have experience on them, did it make your Crohn's any worse or did you notice any difference at all?

I've been on birth control since before I was dx'd with Crohn's, so it might not be the same for you- but the B.C. helps with my Crohn's symptoms. I tried going off my B.C. a couple of months ago which resulted in a flare up.

Thanks, imissicecream. I'm glad the bcp help you feel better, and I'm sorry that going off them caused a flare. At least I know there can be positive sides to bcp!

I took BC pills before and after I was diagnosed, like imissicecream, it was nothing but a plus for me each month. Made things much better for me.

It made things worse for me, exacerbated my symptoms everyday, I no longer take them (haven't for the last 12-14 yrs) so now just during my periods things get whacky with my CD, they're whacky anyways since I'm always in a flare but the stools are looser, I have more frequency and I get pain/discomfort in my belly and lower back during my periods so just goes to show that hormones do play a role in this disease.

It's different for everyone.

I had my tubes tied during one of my resections, so I have no need for birth control pills, but I was put on them about 12 years ago to help me absorb more calcium. They helped my cramping and heavy periods. I also took them for 3 months straight then off for 1 week, which I quite enjoyed. I had an endomietrial ablation in November so I went off B/C. I am still getting periods, which supposedly I wasn't going to get, but the weird things are that they are ALWAYS on the 11th, which makes no sense since every month has a different number of days. And the night before I can not keep my eyes open. I literally fall asleep sitting up at like 7PM. This never happened to me before.
