Antibiotics for remission?

 I was just thinking. When I had my first flair, I had severe bloddy diarrhea for about 3 days. I was given Cipro by a doctor because I was on vacation at the time, and by the end of the day I felt 100 times better.
   I then did not take anything else until about 6 weeks later after my colonoscopy. The diarrhea never really came back, and although I was never 100%, i was much much better.
   My question is.... Has anyone ever had any success with antibiotics alone? I'm just thinking about it. Thanks.

Sulfasalazine works well for some people, especially those with Crohn's in the large intestine. It's a combination of a mild anti-inflammatory and a sulfa antibiotic. Since you responded well to antibiotics previously, it might be worth trying for you. Also, Flagyl and Cipro are used to treat fistulas and abscesses in people with Crohn's.

yea it might, but it didn't work for me, mine was in small, and when I delveloped abcess, it ate a hole in my bladder, and nothing worked but surgerically to remove 8ft of the disease part of my small, which included the abcess. what alerted me to the abcess, I started peeing air and food, this was in 1971, they cut into me at the same place 4 times, so i have a huge signature from the surgions, thats 10" long, but you know I'm walk proud at the beach, I'm pretty fit so people can see it didn't hinder my way of going.

My doctor recently prescribed the antibiotic Xifaxan for my flare. Although he still want me to go to Cimzia, the Xifaxan has greatly improved my symptoms. He said its his secret weapon and that not many GIs use it for Crohns.

I was on Cipro alone for about 3-4 years and it was the only thing that worked for me. I did build a resistance to it however. Funny, the same thing happened to me. I was in the hospital with my first flare, they gave me cipro in the hospital and I recovered instantly. A few months later, I had the "lightbulb" go off in my head, why not try Cipro for my Crohns?" I googled it, and asked my doctor to put me on it, and I was great for a few years.

I know many doctors do use a Cipro/Flagly combination as well.

I'm on Cipro and Flagyl, have been for about 2 months, and they have greatly improved my symptoms. 2 months ago I did a CT enterography which detected abscesses, a fistula and a perforation. They were saying that I needed surgery because no medication could fix it, they didn't even think that the antiobiotics would. I had an ultrasound last week and they couldn't detect the abscess, so it's possible that the ultrasound fixed it, but because of the antibiotics, I may be able to avoid surgery. It's definitely worth a shot.
