Cat bite, Augmentin, and Crohn's, OH MY!

I've had quite a challenging week, so this post is partly so I can vent, but any words of advice would also be welcome. I had a 15 year old Golden retriever that I had to put to sleep last week. It was a very tough decision and a hard loss. Two days later (last Thursday), I was sleeping with my cat, and accidentally rolled over on him in my sleep. He was startled and bit me on the eyelid. He is 11 years old, and this has never happened...I really think it was just a freak accident. Anyway, I had to go out of town the next morning, so I didn't get seen by a doctor, but I called my brother who is an ER doc, and he insisted that Augmentin is the only antibiotic that is good at covering cat bacteria. I have had big problems with my Crohn's with Augmentin, but my face was starting to swell up, so it was heading toward a serious infection. My eyelid is much improved, but as expected, I'm having pretty severe diarrhea. I called my GI who said to try to hang in there with the Augmentin for as long as I can, and take probiotics (I already was) and immodium. I'm a little scared to use the immodium, because in the past, I have gotten bad cramps and it sends me in the other direction!

I'm pretty depressed. I miss my dog, and I have been in remission. I hate to get back on the Crohn's rollercoaster all over again. My doc said he'll give me Flagyl to counteract the Augmentin if I don't get better once I stop the antibiotics. If anyone has any experience with any of this or words of wisdom, I would appreciate it!

are you saying that you took antibiotics previously (for crohns) and if so, did you improve? ...as you say you are in remission, so was that from the same antibiotic?
You imply I should have words of wisdom...there are none pertaining to the bite...as the antibiotic prescribed as precaution from bacteria seems reasonable.

Since you say words of wisdom this suggests you have some additional information or have heard of something? You allude to a relationship between anitbiotic and rollercoaster? If this is true, it possible there is relationship but you do not appear to be allergic to penicillin as you were prescribed augmentin (verify) yet my words of wisdom would have red flagged this area if you were allergic. So i dont understand the roller coaster reference. It sort of implies a suggetion of the antibiotic as a trigger for crohns. I have similar thoughts if that is what you imply. The relationship however is through allergy however and since you are not allergic then Im at loss of what to add. Do you have any allergies?

Most of all however is the phrase "Flagyl to counteract the Augmentin"...I would absolutely ask what the h*** that means.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.. I know how I'd feel if I lost one of my beloved dogs... absolutely crushed.. I've got one little dog in particular and if anything happened to him.. you'd have to give me a bottle of Xanax and leave me alone for a month... and your kitty I'm sure was reacting normally to the fact of being rolled over on... lol.. It was his way of getting your attention before his life ended... lol..

As far as the antibiotics, I'm sorry to hear the trouble you are having with the Augmentin.. I've never taken antibiotocs since being diagnosed with IBD and I condider myself lucky in that regard... I've always been pretty healthy except for THAT... lol.. I don't have any experience or words of wisdom as far as antibiotics go, but I just wanted to wish you a good recovery from your kitty nip, and that I hope you don't have any complications from the meds and can just get better...

Gumby I am sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved dog. Big hugs to you! As for the Augementin that tears up my guts something fierce. I had to stop them after about 8 days as I was so sick to my stomach because of it. If you have gotten at least 7 days down, I would just stop it. I think that amount of antibiotics would have killed any germs from the cat bite. Hugs and good luck!

Gumby Im really sorry about your retriever they are such good dogs. about 8 years ago I had a blk lab and a brown lab they were good dogs. It takes a little time but you'll get over it. And your cat I think your right you just freaked him/her out. Now Augementin or any antibiotic it always gives me the big D. Its funny when I'm given Augementin and predisone at the same time I get thrush. But I don't like imodium it really binds me. Makes me uncomfortable. I don't blame you there. There are other antibiotics out there maybe you could ask your doctor to change it. That is if you still need it. I took probotics and they stop me up bad. And I dont ever get constipated. So I'm not sure, if your already taking them, maybe a larger dose or yogurt. It may sound weird but sometimes bread will slow things down for me. I did read somewhere that you should take probiotics while your on antibiotics and for so long after too. But I dont remember for how long that is after. Also you may want to take something for anxiety just for a short period or something to distress. I hope some of this is useful. Again I'm sorry for your loss.

Sending you big hugs on the lose of your dog! I have 2 kids, lots of neices and a nephew, but my cat is my screen saver! She sleeps on my pillow every night. I would be lost without her. ((((HUGS))))
