Anyone ever had a Strictureplasty?

Hey all, I had a resection 10yrs ago but the last 5yrs I keep going on and off pred. Doc thinks it might be a stricture from scar tissue. Has anyone ever had a strictureplasty done and how successful would you say it was? nancy

I have not had a strictureplasty, but the one thing I have heard that if possible, its best to have a stricturplasty as it saves bowel. I have heard that they are highly successful though. Good luck!

I also heard that Crohn's RARELY returns to that area. I think I wll be having that soon instead of a resection. I'd rather have my bowels.

debilitated: how do you know that you need strictureplasty for CD? What diagnosis did they run on you to make this determination (just curious). From what I understand strictureplasty still involves anastomosis, it is more bowel-sparing than other methods.

Nope, strictureplasty does not involve removing more bowel. The surgeon makes an incision lengthwise along the narrow area and then stitches it back up crosswise or the other direction. This actually opens up the bowel. I've had a resection in 2000 where they removed 9cm of ileum, where they stitched my remaining ileum and colon together-there is a narrow area. Could be scar tissue, could be inflammation, could be both. If it is scar tissue, they can do a strictureplasty to open the scar tissue up and make it wider.

Nancy my second resection was because I developed a stricture at the reconnection site. I guess that happens to alot of us.

had one, did not work for me.. blew out 2 days later.. very bad. i think a lot depends on the condition of the bowel at that point, whether it will hold the staples or sutures.. not that i could have another one, but for me i would not. never had a problem with a good ole' resection. ;0)

every research paper suggest that a strictureplasty is superior to a resection in terms of recurrence of initial simptoms at the affected spot
3% for a stricureplasty and 28 % for a resection in the first 5 years

I had both.

Strictureplasty is usually the first option of surgeons (not for everyone), but it's not always possible. When the narrowing is too long, it's not possible.
