Hi-
I also have been anemic, have lost lots of hair due to low iron levels, and I also have crohn's disease. I'm learning how to combat it all, but this is what I've tried, and I'm no longer anemic.
There is Iron in vegetables. Iron tablets often aren't effective unless they are consumed with Vitamin C so drinking a glass of Orange juice with the tablets help absorbtion.
In general green vegetables contain iron such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, capsicums, there is even Iron in tomatoes,
They MUST be combined with vitamin C- so go for yellow orange colored fruit or vegetables to let that get absorbed into the body.
Try making a cheesy broccoli soup and eating an orange after it. Don't use milk... milk is hard to digest... instead use yogurt.
Also I make my own
Fantastic Zucchini soup with Parsley.
1.Slice then Steam
2 Zucchinis (Courgettes UK) (Don't peel them, as the dark green skins contain the vitamins.)
2. Once steamed put them in a blender add
1 serving of smooth yogurt and lots of parsely. (Parsely can be fresh or dried. I use dried parsely.)
3. Add water to desired consistency and return to pan on low heat .. Add salt and pepper
People love this and it is a hit at my house! People think there are potatoes in it but I never add potatoes. 4. Serve that with something Orange or yellow that has vitamin C in it. Or eat Fruit for dessert.
GREEN +ORANGE = Iron absorbtion :)
Health Benefits of Zucchini (Courgette)Contains potassium and sodium, which will aid your body in regulating its levels of fluid. Courgettes also provide calcium, especially useful for children in strengthening their teeth and bones. Iron in courgettes will increase circulation of oxygen around your body, as well as benefiting enzymes that make energy available to you. The high level of vitamin A in courgettes will ensure growth and maintenance of your body's tissue, as well as being essential for your vision.
