Dogs get Crohns??

it's funny how they say part of treatment is giving dogs a diet low in fat . . . i would probably give them less corn based dog food and more of what they are supposed to eat -- MEAT

My dog suffers bouts of doggie colitis (he gets bloody D). Thankfully it's only when he doesn't eat right, so he's okay most of the time. We tried to get him to eat the BARF diet, but it was a no go. But at least the dog food he's eating now is grain free (Innova Evo). It's something like 95% meat and 5% vegetables.

 

Mine doesn't do too good on fresh meat, she gets chronic D for about 36 hours :(

For her we use Burn's Complete.

Yeah, a lot of vets recommend Science Diet because, sadly, they are not always super informed in animal nutrition. A good dog food has no corn and grain fillers and is meat. I feed Taste of the Wild. It's grain free and good quality

Both cats and dogs can get Crohn's. And cows too, except in their case it's called Johne's disease <_<.

I feel sorry for animals who get this disease. At least we know what's causing our misery. Animals don't :-/

Science Diet will be better than a grocery store brand. I didn't mean the food should be only meat (though raw food diet is actually very healthy)--but meat should be the number one ingredient in it (first listed)--not a grain or corn or filler.

A lot of the foods you see commercially advertised sponsor vets and other things. They can afford to advertise because they really don't charge less than premium foods. Also, while a food may seem pricey, higher quality, higher protein foods do not to be given in as large amounts as other foods, so the daily cost is not actually higher to feed a premium food

Many dogs have bad reactions to all the corn and fillers. Usually a premium food will lead to better, shinier coats, better teeth, and not cause skin irritation and itchiness

My kitten had some problems with diarrhea and got a shot and was all better--not sure if it's the same thing you're talking about, though.

I had a husky/malamute who had colitis symptoms. I had to be very careful with what she ate

Pam, thanks for the link to 6 star dog food. Mine currently eats the Evo Herring, but it's nice to know what other good foods are out there.

Yep, pretty sad huh? But yes most of the dog foods out there is junk. Especially some of these expensive so called "high quality" dogs foods. We started with Science Diet thinking it was going to be the best. Gave our puppy the big D! We switched to a brand we get at Costco, and does not have CORN as their first and main ingrediant. I was amazed at how many of the brands had all that corn and fillers, and they were considered the premium brands.

My beagle has a real sensitive tummy. She can easily get diarrhea, depending on what she eats, anxiety ect... I always say she's for sure my dog! lol But when she gets sick she goes on a diet of chicken and rice only for a few days. Wish it was that simple for me!

Science Diet sponsors the textbooks and nutrition classes at most vet schools. I see a holistic vet and she completely dogs SD food. Awful stuff and so pricey! Just bunches of corn.

I'm a dog food snob, admittedly, but very cheap. Good food pays off. My dogs don't poop much, have little gas, eat 1/2 what they do on a corn based food, and have no ongoing health issues. Plus their shedding is much less! Kirkland dog food is good quality and CHEAP. I consider it similar to Canidae or Chicken Soup at half the price. Costco has a new grain free food, Nature's Domain, that is only in some markets right now but expanding corporate wide. It's salmon and sweet potato. I pay $24 for 35 pounds. It's comparable to EVO.

There are lots of great affordable foods out there. Canidae is cheaper than Science Diet, esp when you feed half the amt.

Oh come on, you REALLY think the vets are bought off? That's tin-foil hat conspiracy. My doctors get wooed by drug reps all the time but they're able to maintain their professionalism and objectivity. One vet I talked to did sell SD, but two others didn't sell any food at all so what angle could they have. Anyway, I DID read the link and the ingredients of the top-rated foods there do look good. I did read that feeding good food will result in less poop -- I have two cats I feed SD and though they're in great health they do seem to poop a lot! And if the food is cheaper then all the better!
