Was reading a magazine today and there was a small paragraph regarding the appendix which stated that "Recent research suggests it(appendix) may still have a role in supporting the immune system and providing reserves of 'good' bacteria for your gut"

I had always been told it had no role to play!! Makes you wonder especially as lots of Crohn's Sufferers have had their appendix removed.

Interesting. However, mine wasn't removed until my first major flare and prior to my first resection. It had become chronic and attached to an ovarian cyst that had to be removed also.

I was like Lamb too, my appendix was removed at least 20 years after my diagnosis, so its removal didn't cause my Crohns. Hugs!

But what if it was the appendix that started going wrong somehow first? It appears that appendicitis/Crohns in that area can cause similar pain and if the research is correct re the appendix and the immune system/good bacteria, that could then possibly lead onto Crohns. Surgeons think appendicitis- remove  the appendix(as it appears to be in a lot of cases) and subsequently no chance of then putting it all right?

I know, I am no specialist or scientist but all this research certainly make you think!!

There's some researach to suggest that loss of the appendix makes us more susceptible to Crohn's whereas removal of the appendix seems to offer some protection against UC.

I didn't have appendicitis but a surgeon removed my healthy appendix 3 years before my first Crohn's symptoms during a routine tubal ligaton, bladder and uterine suspension. The sucker blackmailed me! I argued w/him for a year but he wouldn't do the tubal ligation w/o also removing the healthy appendix.
