Hi i normally post on the u/c forum but thought i would seek help here  had a colonoscopy friday as i have been having a lot of problems lately pain being one of them was dx with left sided u/c 2yrs ago but new scope showed rectal sparing sigmoid erthema moderate inflammation of descending colon then normal to terminal ileum patchy distribution lots of biopsys taken does this sound more like crohns than u/c to me the patchy bit is a bit of a give away but will have to wait for biopsy results what would you think.

Hi Lambkins,

I just had my first colonoscopy last Monday and was diagnosed on Friday with left sided u/c. I won't be able to discuss the biopsy results until 8/18 with my GI. Kinda concerned as his daignoses contained work such as "likely is"..."at this point". I read that it's possible to have both UC and Crohns.

Diagnostic confusion is typical in the world of IBD, IMO. Except for managing the risk of colorectal cancer associated with UC, there shouldn't be much difference in the treatment protocols that you discuss with your DR whether you're talking UC or CD. I had a UC diagnosis for a few years until I finally got fed up with the diarrhea and switched from Asacol to Pentasa, on the theory that I had small bowel disease, not just rectal and TI inflammation. Voila, end of diarrhea.

Be patient. Are you able to control your symptoms with the medicines you're on? Talk to your DR about your questions and concerns.

It's one or the other or indeterminate....if one is diagnosed with possibly both, it usually ends up being CD in early stages misdiagnosed as UC.

I totally agree there's lots of confusion in the world of IBD...maybe the forms of each is what they're learning...or even a new version of IBD they haven't even discovered yet? lol

There could also be other things going on such as microscopic colitis, etc...which should be ruled out..lambkins..make a list of the questions you need to ask the doc when you get the biopsy results and for sure get a copy.

Patience during this time will be the most difficult. Hang tough.

Thanks for replys it's good to know that your not the only one it's easy to talk on here you can say just what you feel and nobody minds just having a bit of a hard time at the moment not knowing which it is, is a bit confusing not that much would change that much just the dx will wait and see.
