OT - Trying to Conceive

My wife and I have decided that we are going to try to conceive another child. We got pregnant with our daughter before I got diagnosed and started any medications. I was doing some reading last night and found some potentially disturbing information on the ccfa.org website. It says the following:

"If a couple is trying to conceive, he should stop taking sulfasalazine or switch to another 5-ASA compound such as mesalamine, balsalazide, or olsalazine, as long as his doctor approves of the change.

Men should not take the immunosuppressive drug methotrexate for three months before conception, and women should not take it before or during a pregnancy or while breastfeeding. This drug is extremely toxic to a developing fetus or newborn.

Men are also strongly advised to stop taking 6-MP and azathioprine for three months prior to conception."

I don't think it will be possible for me to go off of both of these medications for three months. I haven't contacted my doctor yet since I just read this information last night. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions or has had any experience with getting pregnant while taking medications for Crohn's. I'm probably going to contact my doctor and see what he says later this week.

Mesalamine is Pentasa, so you are okay with that one! It really sucks, my husband and I want to try after Christmas for our first child, but there's so many things to consider! I finish nursing school, here in Cleveland, tomorrow and I'm moving out to Pittsburgh to join my hubby in our new house we bought in May, which I haven't lived in yet. It's so hard to plan all these important "life decisions" in between flares and remissions. I'm still not in remission since I've been diagnosed in Sept. 2007, it's better, but what is really a remission? Are you currently in remission?

Jenngrl81 - I'm in remission and have been since after my resection surgeries in '08, thank goodness.
