Hello all,
I have a fairly simple question this time. Twice since Sept of last year I have had really bad blood tests..ie my hemoglobin has been 7.0. part of this is due to iron anemia but I have also had very strong presence of blood in the old poo-a-roo's.... Do they make over the counter type tests that I can purchase myself instead of ending up in the e r getting blood transfusions and iron drip bags... I hate the hospital... I have already spent to much of my life in them so.... maybe if I can catch the loss and relate it to my doc I can avoid the entire hospital admissions. I am so very weary of them.

I know there are OTC supplements (Slow Fe being a popular one), but you'd have to ask a doctor if that is right for your situation.

Already taking iron but need affirmation of blood in stool. I have never ever been able to see blood in 30 years. I have had 4 resections and now a host of other problems.. fibro, psoriasis, copd, chronic inflammation of joints etc.

I've heard that there are home tests for occult blood, but when I've gone to a few pharmacies and ask they look at me like I'm some kind of nut and say they've never heard of it.

Can you ask your GI to have your blood tested monthly?

I can't help I'm afraid (sorry :-/), but I find it interesting that you can have a lot of blood in the stool without being able to see it. I can't say it makes much sense to me, but I seem to have the same thing: blood in the stool which I have never been able to see. As a result I've had anaemia for years, with my Hgb falling to 7.1 earlier on this year.

I do have a suggestion actually. Can you not just go in for a day visit? I was referred to the haematology department and they gave me a litre of iron over the course of two visits. With most people, they can give that litre in as little as half an hour, but because I react badly to almost everything they did go much slower with me - and only did 500ml at a time. But it worked. Quite fast in fact. In two weeks from the first infusion my Hgb went up to 9.4. Dunno what it is now, but am pretty sure it's not 7.1 again.

Oh boy I guess it is gross time. If you don't flush for a while doesn't the occult blood, if there is enough of it, show up in the water. Apologies all but I think that used to happen to me when I had a lot of blood. :(

I'm thinking just ask for a few of the ones he has in his office. All he can say is no right?
