idea  Hi my fellow crohnies                                                                                                        Have not posted for a while but have kept an eye on things                                                Inow have a ?? for you The hospital phoned me yesterday to let me know they could fit me in for a barium meal Xray   any info on this would be appreciated  i am also booked in for a colonoscpy  THE BIG ONE  in october but i will ask you more on that closer to the time  ( not looking forward to that ) have had a sigmoidoskopy ( bit uncomfotable)  info on the barium first  please wink   Regards to you all

I had a barium meal a couple of years ago.  My experience was that I was assisted in swallowing a tube which was fed down my intestines to my bowel.  A chalky liquid was then poured down the tube directly into my bowel.  They then took xrays of the area.  Shortly afterwards I needed the loo a number of times. The stool was very heavy and chalky, this lasted about 2 days.  Other than this there were no side effects.

I have heard though that some people drink the barium meal, but this then obviously has to pass through your system.  With mine they wanted it to go staright to my bowel. 

Im sure others will be along soon to give you their experiences.

Have had this test lots of times. Barium doesn't bother me! like miss muffet says...you just "go" chalky for a few days. Not a big deal. I can't have dye in the Barium...sometimes they'll add it in. I'm allergic to the dye..so they just take that part out and it worked fine.

Yes, I did the drinking too. It was pretty unpleasant, but no more so than any other procedure. You drink several glasses of the sweet chalky stuff. Then you wait a bit until it gets into your system. They do a check to see if it is ready. I had to wait a little longer, then they took me in. They take a bunch of pictures while you are lying down and standing up in different positions. It does take a couple of days to clear out of your system, but it was fine.

The colonoscopy will be fine too. Did you do the prep for the sigmoidoscopy, or did you do it with no prep? I have done it both ways. The colonoscopy is less uncomfortable than the sigmoidoscopy because you get sedation for the colonoscopy. I have had most of my sigmoidoscopies without sedation. The worse part is the prep. After that it is fine.

Littlemissmuffet Flowery Writermum Many thanks to you just back from hospital it was the drinking type one (nasty stuff)told me i would probably be in there for several hours but i must have been lucky all done in about 1 hour 15 mins the doc siad that she could not see anything untoward (WELL PLEASED)Yes writermum i did have prep for sigmoid but i dont think it worked to well coz on the way around going up we met something on the way down lol they did manage to take the biopsies though whitch confirmed crohns Will ask you more on the colonoscopy nearer the time if i may once again thank you all Regards maximus (ted)

Glad you survived! The stuff is icky to drink...but not a painful procedure at all. So the Crohns was confirmed...sorry:( I see you've been dx since 09 and are on lots of meds. Sorry about that toooooo!
