Last Dec/Jan, my insurance made me switch from Effexor XR to the generic Venlafaxine. I take a 150MG pill and a 37.5MG pill each day. I've often seen the smaller pill sticking out in my stool. 3 days ago I saw the larger one sticking out. And so began my 3 day poop analysis (throwaway utensils are sure useful).

Day 1: 2 undigested big pills, 1 mostly digested big pill, and 1 undigested little pill

Day 2: 2 undigested large pills

Day 3: 5 (yes 5) undigested large pills and 1 undigested little pill

So obviously the manufacturer of this generic pill sucks, and makes the XR coating to thick or something. I've read that this isn't exactly uncommon with generic versions of pills. My main question is, how can I have so many pills in one poop, when I only take one large pill and one small pill a day?

It's no wonder my anxiety and OCD has been worse this year!

Oooh. That's not good.

Have you told your doctor? I think s/he really needs to know about this...

LOL, this is definitely the place to talk poop turn

My doc knows about the small pills being undigested. She told me to ask the pharmacy about it, but they were no help. When I see her next month, I'll tell her the rest of the story. For all I know, I haven't been digesting these pills the whole time, and they were just well hidden until now.

But how the digestive system moves things along is still a mystery to me. You would think that everything would move along at the same pace, so how pills could be left behind for so long is weird.

My Effexor is in a capsule form...and it's the generic. On days I forget to take it until later in the day, I open the capsule and swallow the granules. I know this isn't exactly correct, but at 3pm I don't want to take an XR "upper" that will keep me up all night.

I wonder why generics are all so different. Shouldn't they all be capsules if the original is?

I agree Becky, the generics should all be capsules just like the Effexor! I didn't even know they made a capsule. I was about to happily call my doc and see if I could get a prescription for those. But first I looked at what pills my insurance covers, and dang it, they only cover the freakin' non-digesting tabs mad! I guess that explains why my doc didn't write it for capsules in the first place. Oh, and I was mistaken. I don't have the XR version (this would be the good capsule form). I have the ER version (the crappy non-digesting film covered tabs).

Maybe you could get your insurance to switch you to name brand instead, since you are not absorbing these pills? Just a thought! I had to do that with my Prilosec, the generics weren't working for me. Good luck!
