Bleeding Question for People with Perianal Crohn's

I get on and off rectal bleeding for which I am currently adding Salofalk suppositories to the oral Salofalk to try to keep it under control. This has been going on for a while, but it is mostly minor bleeding. If you have perianal Crohn's like me, how long do you let the bleeding go before moving on to prednisone or something more that the 5-ASA? The bleeding is mostly under control, but I have to use a suppository every day to keep it that way.

My other question is about what the bleeding looks like. Usually the bleeding is red because the inflammation I have is in the last couple inches of my rectum. Some mornings however it appears to me that there is the "coffee grounds" sort of blood in the poo. I am assuming that it is actually blood that has darkened because I am sleeping and not going to the bathroom for a while. Does this make sense to you, or have you heard this from your doctor? My GI says that my ileum is fine right now, so there shouldn't be blood coming from anywhere else in my intestines.

Hi Writermum, I can only really talk about my experience, and I am unaware of precisely where my crohn’s is located, but have been told I have crohn’s colitis and I have peri-anal crohn’s, involving skin tags, abscesses and fistula. I have a scope this Friday to find out what’s going on higher up but I think its pretty much everywhere for me, including small and large bowel.

When I have had bleeding, it’s been all sorts. I would usually have bright red blood, sometimes coming out following a BM in a stream, sometimes coming out mixed with the bowel movement. I don’t think I have had coffee grounds-type blood, but I have had large clots pass before, jelly-like masses (very scary) which I think have clotted whilst sitting ‘higher up’ in my digestive tract. These clots came through in the first year of my crohn’s, when things were particularly bad.

I would think it would be a good thing to raise your concerns with your GI when you see him next… sorry I cant offer any better advice!

yep, I have crohn's colitis /perianal crohn's as well and never had coffee grounds poop. You need to be careful because I've been on a few drugs in the past (though I don't think they were IBD drugs) which said basically with that symptom to see a doc pronto.

it sound like with darker blood just means it's coming from hgher up (ileum?) my bleeding is all at the end of my colon so its always bright red.I have a colostomy now but before, with every bm there was "some" blood, sometimes what seemed like a disturbing amount. but it always looks worse/more when it's in the toilet.

I have that once in a while, mine reminds me of more like dark tissue paper. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is mucus or blood. but I feel your pain!!!! Good luck with everything

I do get something similar and my GI says it is from anal fissures and/or piles (hemorrhoids).

Really think you should follow up with your Dr though in case if is a drug related side effect that needs attention and more importantly to give you peace of mind! Good Luck :-)
