Guys I need ur help. Since school is only a week away I need an idea of what cooking appliances and other things can be useful for my roommate (who has Crohn's). Besides a microwave.
Here are a list of things I am NOT allowed to bring:
For your safety and the community, leave these items at home
Pets, except for freshwater non-flesh eating varieties
Halogen lamps
Candles
George Foreman grills, hot plates, space heaters and other direct heat source appliances. Microwaves and coffee pots are allowed.
Drapes
Air conditioners

When I was in college, we used the good ol' hotpot. This is not the same as a hot plate. Great for soups and boiling the noodles for pasta and macaroni and cheese. We also used it to make scrambled eggs. We would use a second one to heat up the spagetti sauce.
We used to make grilled cheese sandwiches with the iron. Just make sure the iron you use is ONLY for cooking though! And clean it well after each use.
We also had a toaster in our room.
I also don't see why a crockpot couldn't be used. Very handy to throw everything in in the morning and have dinner ready when you get home. The internet has some great crockpot recipies.
And get the biggest dorm sized refridgerator you can find!
Trust me, hungry college kids become VERY creative when it comes to figuring out how to cook food!

Sounds like they don't allow much. Honestly, I think I would be just fine with a microwave and toaster only. Ooh, and a rice steamer...wonder if that's allowed?

I would bring a magic bullet. Smoothies are great way to get the nutrients needed when you have an upset stomach.

I took a microwaveable rice cooker/steamer. Can you have a refrigerator/freezer? I always kept extra jello, bread, and other 'sick foods.'

Dorm room cooking is a bit limited. I know there were only bits and pieces of Campus Meal Plan my Daughter could eat without stirring up the guts. She wasn't much of a cook either even with a microwave in her Dorm room but would do occasional soups and crackers to supplement bananas/fruit or yogurt that she brought up from the Dining Hall.
I would say that a toaster could be handy if allowed.

Jermaine, I am going to go a little off topic here now that I know you and your roommate are College students. Don't know if you are Freshmen or not.
College is stressful and create much havoc for a student with Crohn's. Hopefully your roommate has signed up with Campus Disability Services. This is very important if your roommate does have some ill days. Students under Disability Services can't be penalized for excessive absences, can turn in late work and take make-up tests without a deduction in their grade. Disability Service students can get priority registration to get the classes they need at a time of day that suits when they feel best.
Without Disability Services my Daughter most likely would not have survived College as well as she did. She was also upfront with her Professors about
her Disability and 99.9% were fabulous about
it and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure her education moved forward despite all the bad spells of illness she had.
