I have my first GI appointment on Thursday and I am experiencing what I believe to be IBS and PFD... will I sound like an Idiot if I bring this up to the GI, or will he be aware of such problems?!

No, you won't sound like an idiot. Concentrate on giving the GI doc a good history of your symptoms and let S/he do the rest. Good luck to you.
