Here is a story that all of us could relate to. I am all of the things suggested in this article, with the exception of MTX, I have tried everything. Would this really help us? Not sure. I am not much of a dieter, whenever CD gives me a break, I indulge, because having gone through periods of not eating I make up for it, whenever I get a break. But here is the story at any rate.

For some people it can work...for a lot of us, no such luck...
I was actually quite healthy pre-crohn's and ate a near gluten free and almost "raw" diet...alas, due to the distress any type of fiber can cause, I cannot do any "raw foods" much less even cooked to death foods (had some cooked carrots the other day, and had issues), and as to breads and such, they feel better on a crohn's tummy (I get crohn's in my stomach as well, been on long term ppi's)

I read the story you provided, and looking at it with a critical eye...his info is still anecdotal, and not really all that "reproducible" ...nor does any of his info/research appear in "peer reviewed" type journals...I've worked in research medicine myself, so I do have some skills on writing papers for publications...
I'm not saying his info is without merit, I'm just saying to be cautious...
And when anyone says "cure", I'm always a bit leery...

What he did worked. I totally disagree with this being anecdotal, he clearly verified it by testing before and after.
Can you imagine having mercury toxicity on top of everything else? poor kid. thanks for the article.

thanks for the article- interesting and brought up topics I have thought of myself. i think some points were good but of course it is difficult to gauge what is or isn't anecdotal as it is based on one case alone.

Diet has been a miracle for me! I'm very happy with all of the improvements that SCD has made in my life. I'm a supplement fan too, and take some of what the article mentions (like evening primrose oil and fish oils).

I have not been able to establish a direct correlation between diet and improvement in the inflammatory process of CD (which apparently is an autoimmune trigger). I have pushed GI's to explain this to me, but they all seem to treat CD as an autoimmune disease, but it is really not an autoimmune disease, it is chronic with autoimmune characteristics. So diet seems to reset the symptoms in some, but basically it does not seem to provide any consistent response to address disease mechanisms.

I think trying to balance the body's system is a good approach. I don't think it will cure the cause of all diseases, but it might for some. That probably depends on what the cause is, the immune system of each person, genetics, etc.

I feel that I can maintain my remission and remain in control with diet and supplements. The problem is escaping from a full blown flare after it has begun.

For me it was blind stupid luck. My doctor prescribed antibiotics for a perianal abscess that developed during my flare. Flagyl along with probiotics seemed to jump start me into remission.

That is an awesome story from the Huffington post, hope you don't mind if I share it with the UC forum.

There's no question diet and supplements have helped my daughter - her stricture and symptoms have been gone for years, and that certainly isn't due solely to the one little pill of Entocort she was on.

Can she go med-free? We don't know, yet...she is off both meds and supplements this month so we can see what the SCD diet is doing, by itself.
