Mild Crohn's but very tired all the time. Taking Pentasa, 3 tablets, twice daily

Hi eveyone,

I wondered if anyone has experienced being very tired whilst taking Pentasa?

Some days I get up and feel like i haven't slept hardly. Like I could lie down and fall straight asleep again.

I have started a new program at the gym and feared this could be the cause but when I think about it, it's ever since my time in hospital really... maybe just my age !! lol

Also, I have been thinking about how this Crohn's / seton is going to effect me when me and my partner start a family. Would I need to have the seton taken out? Will Crohn's /Pentasa effect my fertility at all?

Hey gymlozza!

Have you have your blood levels checked recently? Could be that you are becoming anemic. I would recommend you asking for a CBC and Ferritin (Iron stores) checked.

I take the sister med to Pentasa called Asacol. It does not cause fatigue. I think if anything your fatigue is caused more by the disease than anything. Yes, Pentasa is safe to take while Pregnant. Not sure about the seton though. So hopefully someone else will know and let you know.

Could be a reaction to the Pentasa. I would think it more likely that your CD is not in real good remission.

Have you discussed it with your GI? Are you getting monitoring labs on a regular basis?

CD does not appear to affect fertility in women generally. As with UC, there may be a reduction in fertility associated with abdominal surgery.

It will require that you go to an OB who specializes in high risk pregnancies as there are complications that are somewhat more common in women with CD. These include small for gestational age, low birth weight, premature birth and stillborn births.

Being in good remission prior to conception and getting prompt treatment if you flare during pregnancy appears to produce the best outcomes - according to a lot of recent research into this very issue much of it done by Dr. Uma Mahadevan-Velayos at UCSF.

Hey,

Thanks very much for that. I haven't had my blood checked for a few months and I haven't been to see my consultant since even when I was diagnosed (can't get time off work without having money deducted!!). I will check in for a blood test and maybe eat some sausages to get the iron back in .

My crohn's is not currently active, but I have spells of fatigue still. Some days I feel almost normal, others it's a struggle to function all day. I've always been like this, both pre and post being diagnosed.

You also should have them check your B12. I just started a few months ago doing injections and it does help some with the fatigue.

Yes, the fatigue! I just started experiencing that this year. It is always bad when my other symptoms are bad, but sometimes even when my other symptoms are under control I could nap a couple hours after I get up and then want to go to bed by 7pm. It frustrates me because I want to be awake/have energy!
Getting your blood checked is a super idea.

you might like to get you Vit B and D Levels checked when you have your bloods done. 

I always get REALLY tired when these are low and now having regular shots has really helped :)

I experienced killer fatigue for about two years before I was able to get a handle on it. Suggestions, as above: monthly B-12 injections; a daily multivitamin; calcium and Vitamin D3 daily; and get your iron level (and thyroid levels) checked. The exhaustion may have nothing to do with the Pentasa and everything to do with the disease, diet, and malabsorption of nutrients. If you're having lots of diarrhea, you may also be dehydrated a lot of the time.
