just a note, my wifew and I have one child, 21 year old just newly graduated, wonderful girl. so we had thanksgiving with my sister and her husband, 1st stop, then we went to her brothers house with his son and his wife and two teenagers, my sisters was relaxing and comfortable, my wife family are cold emotionally empty, I couldn't eat the 2nd dinner so I sat in there couch while everybody else ate, fine, one comment from brothers son was how come you're not eating? stomach ache? i said yea a little bit. now they know I'm on ssdi, they know I have cd, her brother was a teacher for 35 years so he talks to us like students, not like a brother should talk to his sister, just weird people, stomachs like iron. so now christmas, and we said that is it we are not going to subject ourselfs to such chicken s**t attitudes, my wife has a few medical issues as well, so we had our daughter come up with her very nice boyfriend, we really like. we had rock cornish hens steamed yellow beans and mashed potatoes. then we talked at table then played triamminos and chineese checkers and then she played her flute for 45 minutes it was the most wonderful x-mas we could have done, no T.V. just old fashioned board games with two super smart college kids was a blast. just blabbering, happy belated chanukah

Sounds like you had an enjoy Christmas. I prefer to stay home myself anymore too, that way I eat what I am able too, instead of all the anxiety of going to someone else's house and having to worry about what I am going to eat.

Artist guy, I lam glad you were able to enjoy the time with your daughter! This may sound terrible but I am so glad we do not live close to most of our relatives because Christmas can be so stressful around our families! Not to mention the worries about eating food. I prefer to stay home with my husband and son and like Nanners, cook what I can eat and enjoy the peace!

**** artist guy because that is just the way I feel. Your Christmas with your daughter sounds so nice.

We stayed home this holiday too, had dinner with people we chose to spend time with and had a great time!!! The toxic family stuff is just too much for me anymore. We would have driven hours in the bad weather only to spend time with people who are in chronic bad moods. With my health issues anymore, I am learning to take better care of "me" and what makes me happy.

I am jealous, or just a bit. We had to travel 2 hours, each way to my sister in laws yesterday. With my in laws in the car with us! Then spend the afternoon with my our niece and nephew, who are ill behaved on the best of days, but given the excitement of Xmas, they were unruly to say the least. Then we had a horrible dinner and headed home.

Today however, a blizzard came in and my husband, one daughter and I are "stuck" in the house. We have spent the day together working on projects and having a wonderful dinner by a roaring fire. So while the actual Xmas day wasn't picture perfect and our older daughter isn't here tonight, I'm having a pretty good family time this weekend.

That sounds like a wonder time! I stopped feeling obligated to go to either of our families over the holidays. My oldest brought out his two little ones in the morning and we got to enjoy them for a few hours before they had to go to mom's. Then the youngest left to go see friends so we grilled venison chops for the two of us and had dinner.

I bowed out of MILs on Christmas eve because I didn't want to deal with DH's jack a** BIL. So I spent a few hours alone watching corny movies --suited me just fine.

I decided a long time ago that I will not travel on Christmas. Things happen on our family schedule (well realaly the kids) and that is what I want. We open presents and eat what and when we want. The only other folks that are welcome on Chistmas are other family and they know if they come they play by our rules on this special day.

We learned this the hard way by going to others house (like my parents) and no more for us.

I am fortunate to have both my family and my wife's family within 15 minutes drive of our home. We were able to spend time with both families on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. By now, no one in my family is oblivious to the fact that I have a disease and can not eat everything. I have a couple that make comments or act like idiots but I you fix stupid right. (jeff Foxworthy voice) Thanksgiving is always a little tricky for me because we go to my parents for an early dinner and then to her family for a regular dinner. We have usually filled up on the first one and despite 3-4 hours in between meals we are rarely hungry. I usually will try and take a little bit and put it on my plate just to be part of the dinner and talk with everyone. Luckily my wife is typically not hungry also so it makes it easier for me to explain why I am not eating much.
One thing that I have learned to accept since being diagnosed is that you can not please everyone and people will always talk. It is up to us to let it offend us or feel bad for them for not having the capability of understanding. I choose to pity them and live my life to the best of my abilities. Sometimes that means I can attend some parties and get togethers and sometimes it means I will have to stay home. If they truly love me, they will get over it and know that my heart's intention is to be there.
