Rash from tanning beds

Was just wondering if anybody ever gets a rash from the tanning beds? Every time I go after I havent been in a while I get this horrible itchy rash on my back and my chest. Then I have to take prednisone to get rid of it. Its horrible and looks like I have the plague or something. I hate being white so I tan pretty regular, but this rash is sooo annoying. Thanks in advance

You don't mention what meds you are on. Many meds have sun-sensitivity as one of their side effects. Methotrexate, for example, greatly increases your sensitivity to the sun.

It's really not a good idea to keep doing it if you have to use prednisone to get rid of it. The side effects from prednisone often include reduced bone density - which CDers are already at risk of having from CD.

Did you know that frequent use of prednisone may put you at risk for broken bones along with diabetes and a few other very inconvenient and sometimes very dangerous side effects?

Has your doctor sent you to dermatology to look at the rash when you've got it? Have you been evaluated for Lupus or seen a rheumatologist when you have this rash?

Finally, you don't say what kind of tanning bed you are using. Use of tanning beds may be unwise if you are on immune suppressants since there is the possibility that you are at greater risk for skin cancer. It depends on the kind of tanning bed you are using and how much you are using it. Something to ask your doctor about.

I use to go to tanning beds and would always get a itchy rash on one of my hands. Never figured out the cause, even went to a dermatologist. Maybe something with your meds or a allergy to the lotions.

Maybe it's time to switch to spray tanning? It's safer and you're less likely to have negative effects from it.

Sooo, whats wrong with being white ? Try this, look up some friends your age or older that spend a lot of time at the beach, yep , those friends, the ones that look about 20 years older than they are and sorta resemble prunes,,,yep, tan prunes ....

Maybe it's the cleanser they use on the bed. Have you tried the stand up booth?

I suddenly got that rash about 13 years ago on a cruise. I had tons of itchy bumps all over my sunburned area. Every time I go in the hot sun I get these now. They are almost like hundreds of little mosquito bites all over. I've actually been to the dermatologist and had one biopsied. It's an allergy to UVA and UVB rays called PLME which stands for Polymorphic Light Eruption. The only way to avoid them is to stay out of the sun. I sometimes tan for just a few minutes at a time before a vacation so that I can kind of 'toughen' up my skin. Otherwise, prednisone is prescribed. It's not fun. I actually have scars from them.

I was recently diagnosed with Crohn's. Wonder if there's any relation???

Pamywyner thats exactly what mine is...I never had that problem until after I had my son. I can put on sunscreen when Im out in the sun and they arent as bad but as soon as I get in the tanning bed sun screen or not out comes the rash.....its horrible....

Oh and petittarte I have tried the stand up beds but they are the really strong stand up beds. YOu can only stand in the 8 mins....maybe I should just go back to those...thanks.

There is a special sunscreen that I use by a company called Coolibar. The lotion is called Solbar Shield. It has Zinc in it so, and protects against UVA and UVB rays. Works well while in the bright sun. I go to Aruba every year and try to do a little tanning first which helps, I wear a very light weight beach cover-up which is long sleeved and I apply the lotion. Doing all that helps.

If you feel you need to do the tanning, I use the stand up and start with 4 mins, then 5, and work my way to about 7 or 8 only. No tanning is good for us but, this was actually recommended by a dermatologist instead of laying in the sun. It's more 'controlled' she said.

sniper, im with you i like my whiteness where the sun dont shine.. after a long winter up here people are blinded in the spring when the long pants come off for the month of summer...
