OMG. Scream away my dear. Tranquilizer might be more restful...
I assume sick son was immunized but it didn't take? Maybe they should check all of the rug rats for positive titers??? If they're school aged I'd put chicken pox at the head of the list.
Did they check your mumps titer today? Hoping you have a positive titer and are probably immune? (Titer is a blood test that shows whether and sometimes to what degree you have immunity to a particular illness like mumps or chicken pox)
If they did and you had a negative titer then I am not surprised they are freaking out. Healthy adults who get mumps often have no problems - hardly any symptoms sometimes. But adults are more likely than children to develop complications and the most severe complications are pretty scary.
If you really want to know what those rare complications might be - you can find them as easily as I did. But I have never found it helpful to scare myself or anyone else about extremely rare complications from an illness that aren't actually happening yet and are not bloody likely to happen. Heck, you don't even know if you *have* mumps yet. Can't have one without the other.
If it were me I would call and ask first thing tomorrow AM what's going on and what has the doc so worried.
If it were me I would have trouble sleeping even if I hadn't Googled before I could stop myself. When I can't sleep I sometimes take benadryl to help me relax. Warm milk and Sleepy Time Tea help too.
If you have weird symptoms of any kind start tonight, do not hesitate to call your doctor or go to ER and tell them your story. It sounds like your doctor didn't give you any specific symptoms to look out for so I'd just be conservative and if it is worrying then call him/her. They deserve to be woken up in the middle of the night if they didn't tell you what to watch for and when to call...
Sure hope this turns out to be nothing.
Sending out good vibes and all that,
Patricia
