Prophylactic Antibiotics and Immune Suppressants

Hi,

My daughter is on Imuran and had a teeth cleaning because of sore gums.  She told me there was a lot of blood.  I am worried about infection since she did not have prophylactic antibiotics, even though she stopped taking her Imuran a couple days ago.   I was wondering if those of you on immune-suppressants, such as Imuran, take prophylactic antibiotics before teeth cleaning.

I'm a dentist and it's not ADA policy to premedicate patients who are immunocompromised with antibiotics. The policy only states that patients where bacterial blood levels can cause problems with either a valvular problem in the heart, unrepaired heart defect, knee replacement or a congenital heart defect that is not repaired. Some times patients whose immune system is severely compromised (AIDS and some cancers) will be premedicated.

In the case of Imuran and the medicines we're on. There is no reason to premedicate because the body's immune system is still good enough to destroy the transient bacterimia from a prophy.
