Hi everyone. I've been reading posts on this site and finally decided to join. I was diagnosed with crohn's last august with a relatively mild case. After the colonoscopy she put me on pentasa right away and told me I would start to feel better pretty fast. I was still having pain after a few months and didn't notice any improvement so she switched me to apriso. After that didn't seem to help I am now on lialda and haven't felt any better with that either. My doctor told me that the point of these medications is to stop me from getting any worse and depending on how my body responded, they might make me feel better. So far none of them have.

My question is, are there any other medications out there other than mesalamine that would help with a milder form of crohns? My doctor mentioned taking prednisone temporarily, but I told her I want to avoid that unless it gets completely unbearable. I'm still new to this disease and any input would be great, thanks!

If the meds are not working you could try diet to help.  I do an anti-candida diet which is simular to SCD.  Its a bit more strict than scd as i have to limit things like fruit and hone it really helped me to get rid of all the bleeding i was having. Im not perfect im not going to say i am but im not in any pain, or any bleeding. or any joint pain. You can look it up if you want the SCD diet and try it. if it doesnt work you havent lost anything.

i have ulcerative colitis, just to let you know, dont really post on this line as much

mesalizine did work for me but then stopped working so that is why i tried this. It seemed to work better than the drugs.

kell, do you know where your disease is?

A lot of us here take omega-3 supplements, which are anti-inflammatories. Also make sure your vitamin D is where it needs to be.

Stress relief might help, too - are you able to get any exercise? Do yoga?

And dietary changes, even just temporary to rest the gut, might be helpful.

Well my thought is start a low dose of Prednisone to get the inflammation under control and continue the Lialda and see if the two together might quiet things down for you. Usually you are prescribed Pred along with whatever maintainence med you are going to take. The Pred helps to kick down the inflammation and the other med helps to keep the disease under control.

If you try diet, you should also stay on some type of maintenance med. They should be consider as complimentary of eachother. Diet alone is not enough to keep the disease under control. Hugs!! JMHO

Yeah it's at the end of the small intestine and beginning of the large intestine. I have tried different things with my diet. I tried the gluten free diet which didn't seem to help so I stopped. I've also just been trying to eat bland but my weight is pretty low so I want to try to gain weight. I'm afraid if I restrict my diet more I will lose more weight but maybe the SCD diet will help and maybe I will have to try the prednisone. How bad are the side effects? thanks for the responses.

i have the weight issues as well. That was one of my problems. I droped to about 97lb in my flare in 2009. Im now back to 105 around there. It seems to have blanced now so i dont feel like im losing, which is good. It seems that IBD is all about weight loss. That is really annoying I am 5 foot 1. I would like to be 110. Still at least i dont feel like it is droping off me like it was. My experiece was weird before i did the diet change i was eating stuff like chips and potatoes rice, pasta and none of that helped i just lost weight. I did the raw food diet, which helped me in alot of ways but never stopped the bleeding. It took me ages to realize the bleeding was from candida. so that is why i switched from raw to this anti candida diet which is like the SCD but with out the honey or fruit. I eat a very limited amount of fruit.

well do what you think is best for you. probiotics are good to try as well. This illness is weird when i started out with it I didnt really understand it. Not untill i had a really majour flare and couldent hold down food, had joint pain, fatique, ibs, fever, i went to the loo about 20 times, ( i thought it was some sort of food poisioning, but it wasent)  i joined this forum in 2009 but was dignosed in 2007 its becuse the ascol got rid of my symptoms and i didnt think about this illness before it got bad and i 2009 it was bad. I know know IBD is a serious illness. I didnt start off bad but it got bad really bad. Doctors didnt really help so that is why i do all this natual stuff. any way i hope you find what works for you
