Earlier this year I posted in the UC board on this forum, thinking I had UC or UP, but after having a colonoscopy, I've found out that it's actually Crohn's, which has me pretty upset. What also has me really upset is that my GI refuses to prescribe pain medication stronger than Tramadol. I know, doctors need to be careful about prescribing narcotics, but this is ridiculous. Every single time I have a bowel movement, it's followed by hours and hours of sometimes severe pain that is so bad I can't even sit down. The tramadol didn't touch the pain, then when I asked for something different, he prescribed Soma(a muscle relaxer) and it also did NOTHING to help the pain.

I want to stay with this doctor because I know he's good, he's done things for a lot of people in my family, but what should I do here? Any suggestions? I have a desk job so when I get these pains during the day, I can't even sit down to do my work! It gets so incredibly frustrating. Anyway, thanks for reading my complaints.

I take it your largest source of pain is from your rectum? Perhaps a topical medication would aid in faster healing and a topical pain medication would provide faster and more effective pain relief???

He/she may be a very good gastro - for the rest of your family - but you seem to need more so its up to you to find someone more responsive to your needs - or put up w/what you are now. Have a good talk w/your current gastro and tell him/her you need a new perspective on how to handle your pain. Maybe he/she will then FINALLY get the message!! If not, then I'd say he/she is NOT the best gastro FOR YOU.

Great info from Crohnie Too. My other suggestion is to talk to your family doctor about pain meds. GI's are notorious for not giving them, I always get mine from my family doc. Hugs!

Always listen to your own body and do not let any Doctor tell you any different.  Always keep in mind what you are eating etc...

Agree with Nanners, my GI has never prescribed pain meds, when I used to be terrible pain before my surgeries, I asked for pain killers whilst I was actually in hospital and he said no, he reason was that they wouldn't have any effect on the pain. Mind you that was 19 years ago, but now it is my GP who gives me my pain meds and I have codeine and tramadol, which I can take both together if pain is bad. Saying that I now don't get any pain from CD just from neck injury but have to take codeine to slow bowel down as immodium in all forms doesn't work for me.

What I've discovered with dr's. You have to tell them. I told my gp I wasn't comfortable with her prescribing pain med's. I wanted my gi to no everything that was involved with my cd. she said fine. then I went to gi and told him same thing. I evan said to him, doesn't it make sense for you to prescribe everything involving my gut. he agreed. It makes common sense for gastro to presrcib these med's. What is your dr going to say, well no I think you should suffer. You have to be open and honest with a dr that you really want to work you.
