What's the difference? I had 2 setons inserted a couple of days ago and pre-op the doc said it was a "seton stitch" which from knowledge is left in to heal the fistula over a period of time.

Then, post-op, he (surgeon) said that he'll see me in six weeks to "tightening" the setons? I thought they only did that with "cutting setons"?

Why do they tightening them?

Hi Ireland guy did ya get it figured out about the seton,,the way they do it here in Canada is they place they seton I only had one that wouldn't heal with numerous meds even with Remicade,,Methotrexate 2 make a long story short I never had mine tightened never heard of it but I did have mine tied open 4 almost 13 months and I went into a double blind study 4 Humira and developed Erythema Nodosum however after all that healed and I had 2 drop out of the study due 2 the severe allergy they said that the fistula looked good and hasn't been draining since a month prior so they took it out in the office that day,,,knock on wood cause it healed perfect what a relief,,I hope u have success with your healing as well,,the thing is they have 2 heal from the inside out bummer a real pain in the A** lol... Take Care Ireland Guy...How long have u had this graceful disease now,, its only the luckiest of lucky 2 get it lol...

The funny thing is, the fistula was causing me no grief whatsoever. I was getting an abscess wound dressed daily and it wouldn't stop oozing but other than that I was fine, now with this seton in I just lay around because it's quite painful when I move. The doctor said after a few days the pain should go away or at least subside. It was 3 days ago I had the seton inserted.

Oh and I never tried healing it with meds. My GI and surgeon suggested Himura but I always looked at that as my fall back medicine so to speak for my Crohn's Colitis and seeing as that's under control I didn't want to start the Himura just yet.

As long as the pain subsides a bit I will be a happy camper. Hate sitting around, there is only so many books, magazines I can read and T.V I can watch before getting bored. lol

Hello Walrus - check out jpouch.org - there are quite a few posts on there regarding fistulas. I myself have one but am only taking antibiotics at the moment. It's not bothering me right now, but I don't want to get another abscess. So, I'm on hold until I can get in to a surgeon who will have a look around and possibly put a seton in. Not thrilled with the idea, but not happy being on long-term antibiotics. Hope yours works out well!

Last July I had an abscess that got the size of 2 twinkies under the skin very quickly. Had emergency surgery for that where the surgeon left rubber drains in for a week. With in a month I had grown a fistual. I thought that I could deal with it taking just antibiotics and live with it like many people do. Then it festered and drained in instead of out. Thats when I opted for surgery. Didnt know what he was going to do fistulectomy fistulotomy or cutting seton until I woke up. He opted for the cutting seton because so much of my muscle was involved. Let me tell you that little rubber band is the most dreadful thing that they can do! If they do a cutting seton you want Drugs! Luckily mine cut thru in 2 weeks and actually fell out the morning that I was supposed to get it tightened. Ended up 3 months later having a fistulectomy for another fistula in the same area. That surgery was a piece of cake compared to the cutting seton. My surgeon dosnt believe in drainage setons.. says its better to do a fistulotomy than drainage seton.
