Draining Seton - PAIN!

Doctor said the pain should sub side in a few days but I'm still sore, still walking like John Wayne and bored to death as it's keeping me house bound as I can't walk for 10 mins without the pain becoming to much.

My question is, for people who had setons inserted, how long before the pain became subsided?

I had the seton drain in 5 days ago fyi.

Hi .. Sorry you are miserable and in pain. I had a cutting seton last Sept for a fistula. Did the Dr say it was a cutting seton ment to slowly cut thru the muscle? Or a drainage seton? Mine was horrifically painful for the first 4 days. The morning after the surgery I had to call the hospital and get the surgeon on call to call in a script for percoet I was in such pain. The muscle spasmed and I have never had anything hurt like that. On day 5 I went back to work.. but was miserable sitting standing or doing anything else. I figured I was miserable at home so why not go to work and be miserable and get paid for it. With a cutting seton it hurts for about 2 weeks then you have to go back and have it tightened for it to continue to work... so back to the pain thing. I dont know if the drainage setons continue to be miserable for long. So Sorry you have to go thru this.

Sorry to say but I've had mine for almost 8 years and it's even more painful than before. It drains constantly and the pain and itch keeps me up all night. I walk funny too. Oh yeah and now I have at least 4, looking like 6.

Mine seton is 4 years old, and I have never had any pain from it. After it was placed, I had minor discomfort for a couple of days, but that was it. A week after it was placed, I was back to working out. I would definitely call and tell your dr.

Yeah, I don't know if it's a cutting seton, but I just got a letter today from the hospital and I have to go back in 6 weeks. If it where a cutting seton would they be leaving it that long? I have two in place, one going through my recent abscess wound, that I can't feel at all and another that is quiet near my backside.

Maybe that's why it's painful, because it's so close to my back passage.

It sounds like a drainage seton .. the cutting ones are dreadful. My fistula ran from the rectum thru the skin ad opened just north of my hole. The Seton was a yellow rough rubber that he treaded thru the fistula and out of my rectum and anus. Tied it very tight so it would slowly cut thru the fistualand the sphinker muscle would heal behind it, rather than cutting thru the muscle and chancing incontinence. It took 2 weeks and the day I was supposed to have it tightened it fell out on its own! Thank God! I cant begin to tell you how painful it was!
The second surgery 3 months later was a fistulectomy where Dr Hunky Dunky cut that passage out completely. It was superficial and didnt involve the sphinkter muscle. Let a wound 3 inches long and an inch deep.. but was a piece of cake compared to the cutting seton. My surgeon dosnt believe in drainage setons he would rather remove the problem and not have it continue with a drain.
