Woke with major vertigo...??

Let your doc know right away. This sounds like it might be a complication of the cold. You might have labyrinthitus, which is an infection of the inner ear which can be caused by a virus of bacteria - I woke up one morning and the room was spinning. I was off balance, too, and if I tried to concentrate, like working on the computer, would get nausea.

My doc treated me with a round of Zithromax. He also prescribed anti-vertigo medication which caused me to feel very sleepy. Symptoms were much better in a week, but it took months for some minor symptoms to go away (if I suddenly bent down, would get dizzy). At least the vertigo went away within a week. He said the vertigo, which could attack at any time while the infection is active, is especially dangerous if you are driving a car, because you could have an attack of vertigo and get in a traffic accident. 

Thanks guys. I wondered if it could be a symptom of the cold. One of the first symptoms of this cold was plugged ears. The doc had me use a steroid nasal spray to reduce swelling in the eustachion tube. So maybe that's the same type of thing that caused the vertigo. I know it's a bad cold from the other people I know who have it. It's lasted 4-6 weeks for otherwise healthy people. Ok, I'll let the doc know and see what he says. Thanks again!

I was assaulted in 08, and the vertigo from concussion was gruesome, I've had 5-6 concussions, but I didn't get vertigo like this past one. Now it flares up when I'm really tired or dehydrated. if I bend over,I have to lift my head up slowly. for me now it's dehydration that is my trigger for vert. no fun.

Usually it's inner ear, although I got it once very bad and had no cold or allergy symptoms. They gave me "exercises" to do to train my ears not to be so sensitive. But I had gotten either food poisoning or a bad flare and I swear it had something to do with that. On other occasions I've had minor vertigo and the only symptoms I had were abdominal. It went away as my stomach symptoms improved so I never did those exercises much. My kids who at this point don't have ibd had also experienced vertigo with stomach symptoms too. Maybe I just have werid genes and passed them on.  I've never taken cimzia.

 

It's so great to get input on this! Since the vertigo was a little better late afternoon than it was when I woke, I decided to see how I am today. And, I also took an Allegra last night... I do get horrible allergies, but haven't yet started noticing the itching typical with my allergy presentation. I know vertigo can be from allergies, so I figured why not try an Allegra? Today I was a little "lopsided" upon waking, but not even as much as I was when I went to bed. So I guess I"ll just keep an eye on it and call when/if it gets worse again. I haven't had that bad of vertigo in years and years. When I was in my 20s I'd get spinning intermittently - worst of all was that it hit a couple of times while I was driving! I never got an answer for that, though it finally went away. When I was stumbling into walls yesterday, unable to walk a straight line, I was worried. It's so helpful to have the support from all of you! Thanks again!

AG - So sorry to hear about your assault! When I first read it I thought you meant you were assaulted by the vertigo. The second time through I realized what you meant. I was attacked once a couple of years ago as I went to my car. Very scary, though I only ended up with a few bruises. So sorry to hear that you had to endure not only an assault but health issues as a result. Thanks for sharing...

Also, if it wasn't allergies for me, I wondered about dehydration. I meant to look up yesterday to see if that could cause vertigo. I try really hard to get enough fluids - drinking water all day long, avoid caffeine... even adding in "Smart Water" when it seems important. But, the past few days I've faltered. I'll keep a better eye on it!
