Hi,

I'm in the middle of a pretty bad Crohn's flare. I'm currently on Remicade (just started, have my third dose scheduled for Tuesday). After the last round of remicade I was doing a lot better but in the past few days I have been having terrible diarrhea. Everytime I eat something less than an hour later I need to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes.

Here is my dilemma. I've dealt with this before and in normal situations it's not a problem. However this Sunday is my wedding shower. I think that about an hour after first eating it's going to be the opening presents phase with everyone's eyes on me. I"m having terrible panic attacks worrying about needing to run out of the room a bunch of times with everyone watching me. Should I just not eat at the shower? Should I just not worry about it and assume people will understand? I've been to enough showers to know that it's boring enough watching the couple open presents, it'd be even worse having to wait 10 minutes for the bride to be to go to the bathroom.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

How about taking something like Immodium to help stop the diarrhea?? Or do you have any antispasmotic meds like Bentyl? Sometimes if I take that one hour before I eat it helps stop the spasms and diarrhea the foods cause. Hugs!

How many people will be at the shower, and how close are you to all of them? If it's mostly family and close friends, I would eat and they should know you well enough to be understanding. If there are people you're not close to, I'd probably not eat, or take Immodium beforehand and hope you don't have to run to the bathroom.

Either way, the day is about YOU and what other people think of your actions really don't matter all that much.

Try not to stress too much and enjoy the day! Hopefully things will go a lot better than you think :)

Oh, and congrats on your upcoming wedding!

I know when i amin situations where I fear going to the bathroom etc (like when i went on a semi hunting/camping trip this past fall) I used Lomotil 2 times a day once early in the morn..then again before bed. I would eat very light mid day then have a normal meal at night and pretty much while eating my big meal (or soon after) I needed the bathroom. I too am getting married in a couple of months however it is a very small amount of people and my Plan is no eating prior to just liquids Lomotil in the morning light meal the eve before then we are going to dinner that afternoon/evening but it wont be a typical reception so I will be still dressed up but no longer in my wedding dress and still 5 streets from home. That and the people there wll be my parents (who have been with me thru all this since I was 8) my fiance and his 2 teen boys..they live with me now theyknow what its like) and my godson and his parents (he is 2 and his fam is the 1 we went to stay with while on the hunting trip and they all know) my biggest fear is have the urge to go while at the park getting married (def dont want to use a portajohn or public restroom there many homeless tend to use them there and they arent the cleanest.

Another thing is maybe use a suppository that morning and in turn "make" yourself go before you leave

Gaius - I had my bridal shower in June (complete surprise) and got married in October while having a horrible, horrible flare... For my bridal shower, I didn't know it was happening so I ate whatever that morning and took a nap on the couch. At the shower, I ate what looked good because I figured it was only once and I wanted to enjoy it. But I didn't eat until towards the end so that in case I got sick, it'd be much later...

In October at my wedding, I ate a really light breakfast and skipped lunch. Ate dinner, but only ate things that I knew wouldn't bother me. I also only drank water. Had a sip of Champagne and a sip of wine. But didn't have much time to do much else. My Crohn's was very quiet on my wedding day which I was so glad for. It made part of my honeymoon miserable. But I'm glad I survived the wedding without a single problem.

Gaius... I had my bridal shower last month and had the exact same worries! Luckily the shower went off without a hitch!
Like others have said, the day is about you, and hopefully those guests at the party will understand!

Who is preparing the food for the shower?
If possible see if it could be catered to your needs. Try to avoid anything that you know will make you go to the bathroom. Don't eat a lot, maybe just a small snack, then pig out after everyone leaves :)
