Birth Control Update

If you read the post I read about Birth Control you know I wanted to get birth control to get less periods because of Crohn's.Well I called my GI yesterday and he said it was fine. But I go into the Gyno today and he says no way. He says I need a signed paper by my GI saying I can take birth control. He gave me a whole lecture on how Crohn's is a hormonal disease and I can't take any extra hormones. I told him Crohn's isn't hormonal and I just want a low dose or a no dose one. He said it doesn't matter and he said it's a horrible mistake to start taking birth control. If I do get the paper from the GI(which he doubts the GI will give me because of liability) then he'll give it to me because that's my problem. He also told me I might gain weight and he told me you're already overweight you don't need more pounds. I told him I gained close to 20 pounds with Humira and he said you'll probably gain 20 more with Birth Control and I doubt you want that. So that's that he just wants me to suffer like this every month and forget about the birth control he didn't even give me an alternative. I already called the GI office for the paper to be able to take the Birth Control now just waiting for him to call back. Ugh, I hate this.

kazbern is right, what an ass! I hate doctors that don't discuss options they just talk at you.

For one, I would doubt on a very low dose pill you would gain weight. I didn't gain a pound on Lutera. I believe there are some additional risks taking the BC pill with Crohn's but not that high risk, depending on your age and other health history. I have had Crohn's going on 13 years, I was on BC pills for 10 of those and none of my docs, GI or Gyno had a problem with it. Actually just about 2 years ago when I was in one of my worst flares ever, my GI doc wanted to confirm I was still on the pill and wouldn't stop taking it until things were under control because he was more worried about me becoming pregnant in the condition I was in.

I am sorry he was so rude. I would look for a new doctor. For more reasons than one, this doc doesn't sound worth keeping! I hope it all works out and you get the letter from your GI.

Your doc is so full of it his eyes must be brown!! I took bc for 10 years, started before diagnosis and finished after. Never had one iota of problems, actually it was nothing but a benefit to me. I still had periods each month, and never had any cramps or anything. Had my tubes tied and stopped taking them and thats when all my issues started. Seems the bc pill had kept things menstrual wise in check and by going off it, it allowed them free reign.

By the way I didn't gain any weight on them at all. I know a friend who did, but it was only like 5 lbs if that. Hugs!

This is so much BS that this doc is telling you.

It is a known fact that periods give us more problems with our IBD!!
And I have never ever heard that a IBD is a hormonal disease.

You will not gain weight on the pill, there have been no scientific proofs of that.
But either way that would be fine with the progesterone only pill since it does not have the same side affects as the regular pill and will not increase your risks of blood cloths.

Don't give up, find a new doc that is willing to help you deal with your problems.

I had a doc scare me to death after I had my endometriosis surgery, but after I found a specialist in Endo I could see he was full of BS :S

P.s. I have been taking the pill now none stop since august 2007 I have been on Remi and Humira with no bad side affects from the pill.
But now I have come of the pill to try to have a baby and the cramps and everything is making me mad just after 2 weeks off it.
So I can see that the pill was making my life so much better ;)

You know I forgot to mention before I even told him about Crohn's he was going to give it to me and said it'd work wonders on my acne. Which btw I don't even have that bad acne just have it because I'm still a teenager and it happens. So not only does he tell me I'm overweight but I have horrible acne. I'm sitting there thinking wth! And he was just about to give me BC for acne and now I tell him I have Crohn's and he practically forbids me for taking it without even fully knowing what Crohns is. I didn't look too much into the insults because he had a horrid toupee on that didn't cover the back of his head so you could see his entire bald head from behind.:D and he had on coke bottle glasses so he must have some self esteem issues to be taking it out on me. I just want the bc pills and not have to see him anymore. I hate having to deal with ignorant people, I knew he didn't know what he was talking about when he said Crohns was hormonal.
