2 weeks after ileocaecal resection advice?

Hello all

It been two weeks now since my ileocaecal resection surgery (removal of ileum by keyhole) which went all ok. I am still of work and not driving yet and unable to do something.

I have not really got much pain just tender and feel bit bruised under the skin. Bowel is still very soft and quite urgent.

So few question for those that have had this done.

When did bowel movement go back to normal?

When did you feel back to normal?

Was there any exercise you have to do to get those muscle back?

Any tip or advice would be great.

Hi Conker

I had a sigmoid bowel resection in Feb by open surgery, so a bit different. My bowel movemenmt went back to normal within about 3 weeks but I think that varies.
I felt back to normal after about 10 weeks but that was because I had an infection, so it took longer. They say 6 weeks is about normal.

Excercise - walk walk walk, and hold your back straight when you do so otherwise you will get backache

You will soon be back to normal. I feel great now.

Yeah im struggling with the walking and standing up straight hurt too much at mo but slow and steady i suppose.

It is suprising how each week you will notice the difference in your walking. The first 4 weeks I could hardly walk for very long at all. I would ache and feel really uncomfortable. I am at the 3 months stage now and am back at the gym (not weights - just cardio). I am gardening, eating what I like etc.
Just try and walk a little furthjer each time, stop for a rest if you need to, hold someones arm for support. Dont ask, or expect too much of yourself. Plenty of rest and sleep and Im sure you will soon be as right as rain.
Whereabouts are you in the UK. Im in East Yorkshire, am lucky that I have a great IBD consultant and surgeon

I never went to the gym before but was planning to start a family before I realised i need surgery so want to get my fitness right. Do you have children?
The big D is holding me back doing much at all Im hoping that going to improve.
I live in Hampshire.

I dont have children but I do work full time and have a good social life. I may go to the gym but Im not very fit and am rather overweight. ha ha . I dont fit the picture of the typical crohnie

My recoveries were generally about 8 weeks, but I had the full open surgery each time. The diarrhea only lasted a few weeks (3-4) until my body adjusted to the changes. Hugs and lets hope this leads to a long long remission!!

Conker - you might want to ask you GI or surgeon about taking Questran. It comes in a powder that you mix with water. Questran controls diarrhea by binding with the bile salts that aren't absorbed as well now that part of your TI has been resected. It has been a miracle drug for me. I take about a tsp of it mixed with a glass of water every morning and I'm good for the day. I don't leave home without taking it.

Exercise - If I remember correctly, I started exercising on an elliptical machine about 4 weeks after surgery. Before then, like others have said, I walked. Until I started taking Questran, I wasn't walking very far.

I think it took a while to get back to "normal." Your body needs time to adjust to its missing parts. My doc said it would take 6 months to feel really back to normal. I was back at work at 6 weeks and did all my usual activities, including some travel, but it did take close to 6 months to feel at least close to normal, or at least normal in a Crohn's sort of way. Hang in there. Enjoy the recuperation - it's a good time to catch up on movies, tv/cable series and naps. ~SB

I had a resection in Jan. last year and it took me a good 4 weeks to be able to drive again and such. Actually my surgeon put limits on what I could do and when but mine was an open incision. I had D issues after 8 weeks and my GI put me on something similar to questran it has helped a great deal. It does take a good deal of time for some folks to get back to feeling "normal" again.

What does "feeling back to normal" mean?
With respect to BM? Energy/activity? Pain/discomfort?
