Hello! I just wanted to share my recent experience with some dietary changes I made and how it has affected my Crohn's.
I was diagnosed in Jan '10 with mild-moderate Crohn's and was on Pentasa and Entecort for the following year. Beginning in February, we found out (through a small bowel series) that although my symptoms had improved, I still had active inflammation. Doc and I decided it was time to move on from the Entecort. To make a long story short, after a clinical trial through UVA using Pravastatin (yes... medication typically used for cholesterol), having it make a big difference in my CRP and symptoms, I couldn't tolerate the high dose, so now it's on to Imuran.
I haven't started yet, since as soon as I filled my scrip, I came down with bronchitis and a sinus infection.
Recently, I was recruited to join a new study being conducted by a PHD nursing student at the hospital who has had Crohn's for 30 years. This study is all about the effects of a super high fiber diet. She believes (strongly) that Crohn's patients are being misinformed.... we are often being told that a diet with too many whole grains, fiber, etc can be bad. Apparently, the opposite may be true.
I won't bore you with all of the details, but I just felt like I should come here to let you all know that after just 1 week of eating a diet focusing on whole grains, legumes (and other high fiber foods) as well as cutting out as much refined sugar as possible, my symptoms have GREATLY improved. The difference is dramatic, actually. Now, I don't believe that this will put me into remission (neither does my doctor), as the malfuntion in my body causing this inflammation will still be present, but it certainly can't hurt! I'm hopeful the Imuran will put me into remission and with the help of this diet, I may be able to reduce my dose down the road to maintain.
In closing, I'm not a medical professional, but I just wanted to share that, so far in my experience, whole grains and fiber can be a GOOD thing for us Crohnies!
Best to you all.
