I am currently using an OTC probiotic with 10 billion CFU's. (it is a blend of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium lactis)
At my last appointment my GI wrote me a prescript
ion for VSL #3 because we thought it might be a less expensive option than the OTC probiotic. My cost for the prescript
ion is higher than the OTC.
My question, Is the VSL#3 a better product? I am willing to pay more if it is worth it.

I will tell you my experience with probiotics. I tried 3 or 4 pretty expensive brands, gave each of them a fair shot of 3-4 weeks, and each time I got worse symptoms. I figured probiotics were not for me. Then a few years later, my GI practically insisted that I try Align, so I did. After the initial die off, it actually helped, I was shocked. But then about
8 months after that, the benefits were starting to slow down, I was getting some bloating and gas again. My GI told me that your body can get used to the strains in one brand and sometimes you have to switch it up for a while. So he recommended another brand, PB8. I now switch between the 2 and do OK. Sometimes, if things are really out of hand, I will take one in the AM and the other in the PM for a few days/weeks to get things back in line.
I think it really is individual, and if you have one that works for you why mess with it. It took me years to find one that helped me and I was ready to never try them again. If in the future, you find that you aren't getting the same benefit from the one you are taking, then try the VSL, but for now, why mess with something that is working?

Congratulations for having a GI progressive enough to recommend probiotics. Prescript
ion VSL#3 is called VSL#3DS (DS=double strength). Unlike regular VSL3 it is a powder so should be easy on the gut.
Most probiotics contain 10 to 50 billion bacteria units. VSL3 has 450 billion, the prescript
ion DS version contain 900 billion (almost a trillion!). Mixing that with psyllium seed a couple times per day seems to nip my oncoming flares before they can gain momentum. Prescript
ion VSL#3DS is pricey but because it is a prescript
ion health insurance should cover some of the cost.
Everyone's body chemistry is different so do not be surprised that different people find some probiotics more beneficial than others.

I think I do fine with the ones I buy over the counter as I would with rx probiotics. JMHO
