I have heard from more than one source that taken with food glutamine is great for bodybuilders because it helps to build muscle. But taken on an empty stomach glutamine helps repair intestinal tissue.
According to Dr. Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet guru, not only is glutamine effective for healing the digestive tract, (which is what IBDers like us need), but that it also snuffs out cravings for sugar.
On page 168 in his book, 'Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution', he talks how glutamine "maintains the structural integrity of the intestines to such an extent that it is dubbed 'intestinal permeability factor.' No other nutrient is as important for gastrointestinal integrity."
Page 169 (look it up the next time you are browsing a B&N bookstore) Atkins says he uses 12 grams (3 teaspoons) daily to curb alcohol cravings and 1-2 grams to curb cravings for sweets.
One heaping teaspoon of powder is 4-5 grams. I prefer powder to avoid the fillers that are found in pills. (I take too many pills with fillers as it is). I cannot vouch for Atkins but I have heard about
the benefits of glutamine from other sources as well.
