Tough decision. I have heard a lot of bad press about this procedure for treating Crohn's. I have a J pouch, but my diagnosis was Ulcerative Colitis which is a whole different world. I can't tell you specifically about how you will do with the procedure, but I can say it was a great thing for me!!
I had a form of UC that didn't respond to any kind of medical TX and it came on fast. Diagnosed in March and surgery in September of the same year. It was a staged surgery so I had a temporary ileostomy for 6 weeks. That was the worst part....uncomfortable, I had trouble getting a good seal, embarrass in, etc... Once that was gone I did very well. I have had pouchitis a couple times over the past decade but its easily fixed with a course of Cipro. I've also had about 4 bowel obstructions but all were treated medically so no additional surgery.
I eat s very normal diet, I only stay away from nuts and seeds. I have great continence, no seepage or inability to hold on until a restroom is near. I am very active and involved in sports. I have about 6-8 BM's a day which is pretty normal after the procedure, but it's watery.
I hope this is help full. Good luck with your decision!!
