Your Thoughts On Imuran + Remicade

Can any of you give me any information or opinions you have on using Imuran and Remicade for treatment of Crohn's?  My doctor is switching me from Humira (which stopped working) to Imuran and Remicade.  Despite knowing it's probably a very small risk, I'm scared of the implications this has on my risk of cancer - especially since I am a young male.  I was originally going to be on Methotrexate and Remicade, but I developed some pulminary complications to the Methotrexate, so he's switching over to Imuran.

Does anyone have any information or opinions on this?

We have a few members that take both Remicade and either 6mp or Imuran. Some needed more than one med to control their Crohns. I personally have no experience with this, but I wanted to let you know that we do have members who use both. Hopefully someone will be along soon. Hugs!

Hi Johnny Five..my husband is on Humira and 6mp which is a sister drug to imuran. He's been on Humira for almost 3 months and 6mp for 1 1/2 months now. He hasn't seen any major side effects yet except for some nausea. Also, the day of his Humira injection, he gets super tired. I can understand your fears and concerns because we had them too before deciding to try this combination. I was the one more against it b/c I was scared if him dying of cancer. But if this combo works, we rather enjoy the time we have with each other and enjoy our baby girl! It came down down to quality of life for us.

8 or 9 years on both Remicade and 6mp. Worked well for me up until the point where my peripheral nervous system had enough of the Remicade, but that was minor compared to the wonderful remission I enjoyed on those two drugs. I wish I could do it again. No cancer, no side affects other than at the very end.

I'm on Humira and 6mp now. Not working as well as the Remicade (yet....)

Don't let the possible side affects of the drug turn you away from it. It worked wonders for me. I hope it does the same for you!

I took both fr about an year, with good results. In my opinion, go on and be happy.

I stopped immuran after an adhesion blockage surgery, and, without imuran Remi stopped working after some months.

Now on humira only and doing good.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging replies! I felt the same way as everyone here - if my doctor believes the risk is worth the benefit, he's probably right. I'm glad there were so many positive responses and it's a relief to know many others have been in my situation and made the same decision I am about to. Here's hoping it works. :)

I was on a combination of 6mp and Remicade from 1998 or 99 to 2006 with great results. I eventually developed antibodies to the Remicade.

My GI said that if I were to start Remicade I should stay on 6mp because it can slow the body from creating antibodies to Remicade. I ended up having a turn-around for no reason and didn't start Remicade.
