Cipro and Methotrexate intereaction

I am taking Cipro for my fistula. My GI said my Crohn's is not active, but my Rhuemy and CR surgeon say it is. Tons of joint pain, rashes, and muscle pain. Rhuemy is putting me on Methotrexate. I pick up the prescription today and it states that Cipro interacts with Methotrexate. None of my dr's or the pharmacists said anything to me about this. Cipro is the only thing that keeps my fistula in check. Anyone else have this issue?

Please do. They have huge books and computer programmes where they can look up that sort of information, and tend to be a little more... um... service-minded :-) than your average stressed doctor.

Good luck, and please do let us know what they say - I think I've been on cipro and mtx at the same time myself, so am interested.

From what I can find (quick search), there is an interaction between Cipro and HIGH doses of methotrexate. Cipro impairs the body's ability to clear methotrexate. From what I can find on Pubmed, there's been 2 reported cases in children who had advanced sarcomas and were on extremely high doses of methotrexate. Cipro caused them to have methotrexate toxicity.

I'd call the pharmacist. I've prescribed Cipro to someone on methotrexate a few times and never had a problem. But it might not be a problem with the doses of methotrexate that you're on?

I called the pharmacist and he basically told me the same thing Tooth posted. He added I should speak to my dr to get more clarification. I am going to be starting on a very, very small dose of methotrexate. I left a message from my Rheumy, but have not gotten a call back yet. My next appt is 10/19/11. I have a ton of questions regarding MTX so I may wait until after the appt to start the medicine. I get migraines and once in a while have to take excedrin migraine, but the pharmacist told me MTX interacts with all NSAIDS. I'm just better off taking my list of questions to my dr. Thank you all for your responses.
