Maggiem, that's what I kept taking too, Dulcolax is a popular and common stool softener most recommended by gastros. *sigh* It may be time to add a mild bowel stimulant. Or even an enema. DO NOT wait until you actually get an impaction. (Don't do as I do, do as I say??? *weak smile*)
Diarrhea is almost never a problem for me. I have always tended to constipation, even before Crohn's. My "normal" is a BM every 3-4 days. Oddly enough, we discovered quite by accident that a one a day vitamin w/iron (the iron being the key ingredient) will keep me moving comfortably and faithfully once a day. Very much unlike
"normal" people who tend to get constipated from iron.
However, a couple of months ago when I went in to Rite Aid to buy a bottle it turns out they no longer make that particular multi-vitamin supplement. All the others, every brand, had either vitamin K or calcium. Neither of which I can take. *sigh* I've looked elsewhere for a multi-vitamin w/iron that doesn't have vitamin K or calcium in it and haven't found one yet. *sigh*
What I did NOT have enough sense to do was to buy just an iron supplement. All I need is 18 mg a day!!! I just realized this late last week and hadn't gotten off my duff and gone shopping for some.
Now, BEFORE you other "constipators" consider an iron supplement KEEP IN MIND that iron tends to BIND "normal" people. I only know of one other person who has the same response that I do to iron.
And my doctor and I discovered my unique response to iron quite by accident. My iron or B12 or something was just below or at low normal range so he suggested a good OTC one a day vitamin w/iron. I noticed almost immediately I was "going" once a day, faithfully!!! It was such an unusual phenomenum for me I even mentioned it to him.
Then I remembered: as a teenager our family doctor at the time put me on an iron supplement and that was the first time I ever remember going faithfully once a day. Eventually, teens being teens, I quit taking the iron and drifted back to my "normal" every 3-4 days routine up until about 10 years ago now when my current doctor made the suggestion of the one a day w/iron.

I sure feel unloved and unwanted. Gastro's office says go to ER for manual extraction if enema doesn't work. *sob* *sigh*
