Hi, Quick Infliximab/Remicade question. Are there any overseas travel restrictions that you know of? My treatment has been going really well so far and I want it to continue. Any responses greatly appreciated. xoxo

I've travelled overseas many times while on Remi without issues.

Let your doctor know where you are going and for how long. I was on Remicade last time I went overseas. I was in Eastern Europe for 2 weeks in some rough parts of Romania. My doctor gave me some "just in case" medications to take along. I believe it was a bottle of Cipro, my normal supply of Vicodin, and orders to get back Stateside ASAP if anything started to get out of control.

Good news was I didn't need any of it and had a really good time. Knowing that the medications were with me just in case put my mind at ease. I also took tylenol, imodium, hand sanitizer and oral rehydration salts. I'd strongly recommend the oral rehydration salts in case you start to get dehydrated. Dump a packet in to a bottle of water and it'll help stabilize things.

Everything depends on what type trip you, choose.
When you travel by plane, It's more comfortable. You can rent your driver and visit places with him e.g. I was in Krakow, last holiday. Everything was organized (pick up from and to airport, food, accommodation). I recommend you to take trip with guide.

If you are getting immunizations before travel, make sure they are non-live vaccines. On remicade, you must not take live vaccines.

My husband (who has crohn's) and I just returned from India without issue. One thing that I do make him do after coming back from a trip to India is to test for TB after about a month of being back, since TB is quite prevalent in India, so that we can treat it before it becomes an issue if that's the case.

Also, when traveling, we do take just in case meds - cipro for respiratory and stomach issues, xifaxan for travellers diarrhea, and valtrex in case he gets shingles (which has happened in the past). In addition, I make sure he gets plenty of probiotics (I buy yogurt from safe reputable sources wherever I am traveling). I also take prednisone on hand, just in case, but we wouldn't take it without a phone consult with his GI here.

We plan our travel around his remicade infusions, we come back around the 6 week mark after his infusion, so that we get back in plenty for his next infusion. Also, he tends to get tired and have a few symptoms around week 7 of remicade, so we make sure we are back before then just to be on the safe side.

Of course,we also take the usual travel precautions - hand sanitizers, clean drinking water, safe food, etc.

i am planning a trip to greece in two weeks.

i recently got my remi appts switched to 6 weeks instead of 8 becasue i have been developing antibodies and the flares i have been getting from the remi wearing off have been a million times worse than any previous flares. (i was in the ER on monday and my choices for the week were to get admitted to the hospital or stay home on a high prednisone dose until my next remi next week)

but i was lucky that i have my next remi appt in one week, one week before my two week trip. so i am hoping that will hold me over for my trip.

my doctor was fine with this schedule and we are going to switch over to either humira or cimzia once i return.

also, two years ago, before i was on any big drugs, we went backpacking around central america for two and a half weeks. everyone was warning me that i might get super sick from the food, but i in fact improved eating the food down there. everything was more organic, natural and simple and i think easier for my tummy to handle than all of our americanized processed crap.
