God bless my DME provider, Sheldon Medical Supply.

I got a phone call tonight, sometime after 5 PM. My grandson is second chef at a white cloth restaurant in Beaufort, SC. There was an explosion and he was injured. First information was from the ambulance personnel. Burns to the face, torso and left arm. Likely lung damage, mouth, nose and one eye. A heliocopter wasn't available so they would transport him by ambulance to the burn unit in August, GA.

I immediately called Sheldon. It was afterhours so it went thru the emergency number. I explained what happened, that I needed a 3L concentrator and a portable concentrator ASAP. If possible could they have them at the Saginaw office tomorrow by noon. I just wasn't aware, given the circumstances, that this was a weekend!!!

I got a call back. They went over what I needed and said they would do what they could do. They didn't know if they had a portable concentrator at the Saginaw office and might need to go to Sandusky to get one IF they had one available. If not arrangements would have to be made w/a provider in Augusta, GA.

By 9 PM their driver was at my door w/a 3L concentrator and a portable concentrator, showed me how to use the portable, asked to make sure I had enough tubing, etc. and B tanks, be sure to take some w/me just in case, etc., etc.

A little bit of good news. They were able to locate an off duty medical pilot and were transporting him by heliocopter to Augusta. Burns to the torso were not so serious as first thought, most injuries are to the exposed areas of his body, face and left arm but still very concerned about his breathing. The prognosis for his eye is better than first thought.

I'll be leaving first thing in the morning. A straight shot down 75 to Atlanta then 20 over to Augusta. My son, his father, will be leaving Little Rock, AR first thing in the morning.

Please pray for him. He is such a gentle young man, happy and satisfied w/the little things in life.

Keeping him in my prayers!

We take that portion of I-75 through Atlanta annually to head to Florida. Just drove through there a couple of weeks ago. Doesn't seem to be too congested on a Saturday morning, so I also pray that for your safe and uneventful travel.

OH NO, I can only imagine the worry that your whole family is going through. I will be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated when you can and know that we will all be thinking of you and your family. I hope the prognosis only gets better and better.

I'm so sorry this happened C2 . He and you and all loved ones are in my prayers . Please keep us informed when you have the time . Take care of yourself too . You will find that burn units are an amazing place and he is in good hands .

Thanks to all the prayers from wonderful friends like you our grandson is in much better shape than originally reported. His burns are all second degree except his left arm. They did surgery today to graft some artificial skin on it as there were multiple small areas of third degree burns. They are going to take him off the ventilator tomorrow to check his lungs. If he does well breathing on his own they will transfer him back to Beaufort hospital for a week, then back to Augusta to check his arm and perhaps skin grafts. Once the swelling, etc. went down on his eye they were able to determine that it is probably all right.

Someone set a can of commercial Pam-type spray on the stove or grill or too close and that is what exploded. He managed to get his left arm up to his face so his arm took the brunt of the burns. Unfortunately, he gasped when he reacted and thus the concern about his mouth, throat and lungs confirmed by his difficulty breathing.

My son and I were advised to hold off for a day or two so we would know whether he was still at Augusta burn unit or back at Beaufort hospital.

My granddaughter, his sister, is an RN in Colorado, she just transferred back there from Missouri and is scheduled for orientation Monday for her assignment as charge nurse on the night shift so she will fly in next week. She was able to get thru to Augusta and get the skivvies on his condition better than his wife who is of course all scared and upset and discombombulated, bless her heart.

Their friends have been tremendous, taking over with the two boys and getting her to Augusta, etc. The owner of the restaurant has assured her that her hotel bill, all his medical bills, etc. will be taken care of and he will get the Workman's Comp papers to them ASAP. He will be flying in to Augusta tomorrow to visit my grandson.

So I've spent the entire day today sleeping or on the phone. Hubby was scheduled for his annual physical this week and I was scheduled w/my sleep doctor/pulmonologist this week so we are undecided to reschedule or to keep those appointments and plan on going down the following week. My son will hold off until Tuesday and then will go as my daughter in law doesn't drive and they don't even own a car. They live just a few blocks from the restaurant, downtown Beaufort, school, etc.

Again, thank you all, each and everyone of you, for the prayers for my grandson. The news and prognosis is so much better today and I know this is due to your prayers.
