Anybody that has had a MRI SCAN showed that you have crohns . Are MRI SCANS any good on this sort of thing and pick things up ???

I have never had an MRI that was looking for crohns . I was DX by a pill cam . That was years ago so maybe MRI is what they do now .

I had an MRI two years ago to look at the status of my guts, but I was dx'd 20+ years ago because I ruptured. If the MRI replaced the scope, then I would be such a happy camper!

You can use an MRI to have what is known as a "virtual colonoscopy". They can image your abdomen and pelvis and construct a full 3d image of your insides. From this they can detect polyps, inflammation, fistula, abscess, and other possible problems. I'm not sure that they can make a definitive Crohn's diagnosis from it, but they should be able to see any problems. One limitation in definitively diagnosing Crohn's is that they can't take a biopsy.

MRI is one of the alternatives they may use to figure out how things looks like in the abdominal area. If you're having Crohns in the small intestines and quite far up, as I do, they can't use the colonoscope, because the scope can't go that far up. And it happens they can't use a pill cam either - if they suspect that you're having narrowed areas in your small intestines. A pill cam actually can throw you into an emergency surgery while doing that kind of examination. Further; a cat scan may find narrowed and expanded bowels, and is one of the possibilities to use when to diagnose a patient. If you also add blood draws, fecal tests to looking for calprotectin, then you're having a few ways of doing a diagnose.
None of these are enough as the only examination.//BEE

I had an MRI enterography a couple of months ago. It's apparently becoming the new thing since there's no radiation. Only thing is that it takes a bit longer then a CT scan.

I have had several MRIs (during my one year when I had the bad dr) - they seemed to be the first thing the dr would want to do when I got to the emergency room - after the 4th time on one month I finally lost it on the ER dr and refused the MRI and demanded a colonoscopy that week from my regular GI - he finally said he'd do a sigmoidoscopy, and up until that point I think didn't believe me that I was so sick because all my MRI's and all the other tests were coming back normal. Finally after he took a peek inside, he admitted me to the hospital because I was obviously in the middle of a bad flare. Turns out I had developed antibodies to the Remicade (which I thought would be considered routine blood work with all the "normal test results") and it had stopped working months back. Ugh, I hate even thinking about
it. So obviously, I am not a fan of MRIs because I don't think they show you the whole picture. Maybe if I had an abscess or fistula but I don't think they are good for me so I usually tell the doctor I don't want one. It seems to be a common thing to order these days. #endofranthatingonMRIs
