Ferritin, iron, & vit. C

So since June my ferritin levels have only come up from 10 to 16. After all the iron pills I pop, too. So now I'm trying one last thing. I bought Vit. C (absorbic acid) 500 mg. It tastes acidic, and now I'm a little fearful if that will affect my tummy or cause mouth ulcers.
So my new plan is to take 2-3 Proferrin iron tablets/day with Vit. C. tab.
Any words of wisdom?

Any reason why your doc won't give you a iron infusion? I got one when mine was that low and within 3 weeks I felt so much better and my ferritin levels have stayed in the normal range since. Hugs!

They offered to do injections, but I read they can leave a permanent stain on the skin. I'm afraid of having a brown stain on my butt cheek. haha.

On the serious side. I've never used the Proferrin, but let me know how it works for you.

I had an iron infusion, so it was done via IV so no stains and it helped tremendously. I am still working on an iron rich diet, they have me taking Vitamin C and Folic Acid, I think both help the iron work better.

I also read recently that garlic helps irons availability to the body or or something like that. I like garlic so I have been trying to add a couple cloves when I cook, to chili, pasta, ect.

Ha! I have two brown bruises on my butt.....one on each hip. Did injections every two weeks for 8 injections....no difference except for my "arse tattoos" as my hubby calls them. Tried the Proferrin for one year....my GI said I was just wasting my time and money. I could take a bottle a week and not see a difference. Just finished my iron IV session (1 infusion a month for four months) and FINALLY my levels are where they are supposed to be. We are going to see if I can maintain my levels for 6 months and then re-evaluate.

The iron IV infusions don't leave any marks.....takes 3ish hours in the hospital but that's it. The injections leave the marks....

Yup, I too have the iron stains on my hips, but I have been having the infusion now.

The iron infusions work faster, and don't cause constipation like pills do. I'm a big fan

Your iron supplements will be absorbed better if you have them with OJ - at least two hours after taking any other vitamin, food, or medicine - and at least one hour before taking any other vitamin, food, or medicine. In other words, just about everything interferes with iron absorption so be sure there's at least a two hour window on one side and one hour window on the other.
