skin around the fingers breaks ???

Hi,
Do you suffer from what can be called skin breaks/cracks? The skin around nearly 8 of my fingers is broken. What is the cause? I've had this since I was a child a long long time before I had my CD. My doc always tells me that this is an indication of vitamin deficiency and prescribes me a multivitamin. However, it does not work and these breaks lead eventually to bleeding. I know that it's very minimal but it's annoying and hurts and even water irritates them. Someone would think that this is something trivial but it happens that I put plaster around nearly all my fingers to avoid their getting contaminated from chalk as I'm a teacher. Has anybody had this before? What did you do?

I personally have no idea why this happens, i get it on occaision, not very often at all but i use a special cream which is supposed to soften and hang nail which helps, not sure what its called though, keep your eyes open, if i remember ill deffo let you know the brand.

Dry skin is the number ! cause of this happening. When I stopped using natibacterial soap all the time, it helped most of the time. I use antibacterial soap after handling meat or upon returning home from out in the public. I also found a hand sanitizer that had a moisturizer in it. Hand sanitizers are primarily alcohol, another very drying agent.

Perhaps getting old mittens, moisterizing your hands very well, and the wearing the mittens at night will give your fingers more time to absorb the softening agents.

Ditto Ides. I use benzalkonium chloride sanitizer, instead of alcohol.
And out of all the products I have tried, Palmer's Cocoa Butter, the tub of real butter with Vit. E., works the best.
Avoid water and alcohol based products. Oil based products are better.
Also, if I run out of cocoa butter, I will use olive oil, right out of my cupboard.

Yep, old socks and olive oil before bed. Works for me all winter long. I get cracking on my thumbs.

Consumers reports says that Cetaphil is about the best traditional moisturizer. What do you do for a living? Do you wash your hands too often or use chemicals??? I work outside and I find that my hands and fingers crack at the changes of the seasons, spring and fall.

Thank you very much. Yes, I do use a lot of sanitizers and I never made the relation between them and my finger cracks. I'll try to use those that are oil - based and I like very much the idea of olive oil and a glove.

Burt's Bees make a fabulous cuticle cream that works great. It's in a small tin that you can easily carry with you and apply during the day.

I work in a healthcare setting so I'm constantly washing my hands and using antibacterial stuff which dries my hands terribly. Burt's Bees cuticle cream has been great for me!
