Has anyone been on Azathioprine for 8+ months?

Dear Patients

Hope you are all well. I have arrived at my holiday destination in Pakistan... The Dr said he was happy for me to go. I am just wondering is Azathioprine safe to have for more than 8 months, I've been on Azath... since may and have been told i should still continue it while I'm abroad too.

Many people have been on azathioprine for 10 or even 20 years or more.

You should have regular checkup with your doctor while you are taking it.

As long as you tolerate it well, you can stay on it for many, many years.

I have had CD now for 24 yrs, I started that drug to get off pred and was on it for at least 12 yrs (maybe ongerr now I forget) I went into remission and the drug began causing bad effects on me so I was off it for many years now I am back on it again

I've been on and off imuran for years. I know of some people on it for more than 10 years. Your doctor should monitor your liver and platelets while on it.

I've been on it for nearly 17 years and is the thing that works well for me keeping the CD in remission, Humira didn't go to well for me so will stay on the azathioprine.

I've been on 6mp for a year and a half without too many problems. I have had my wbc drop too low - definitely get your blood checked regularly.

I have been on it for ten years without issue, currently at 150mg daily. I have just had to have my blood done every 6 months. When they increased my dose from 100 to 150 I did loose a little hair and felt a little more tired for a while but then bounced back. If its working for you and you are not having a lot of side effects then you should definitely listen to your doctor and stay on the medication. It would stink to have a flare while abroad, I hope you have a great holiday!
