I was sitting here and wondering....CD causes problems throughout the body.  I have heard of so many problems that eventually get linked to the CD.  But now I am wondering...I have had sinus problems for a long time now.  I had an operation about 4 years ago where they drained my sinuses and opened them up.  Now I have to go for surgery again because they are blocked and clogged again.

So I am wondering..can this somehow be related to my CD?  Has anyone else experineced sinus problems?

Hi,
I have seen several ENT docs until finally one told me that my sinus is caused by GERD. When I told this to my GI, he confirmed it. So, whenever I have sinusitis, I know that my stomach must be the reason and increase anti-ulcer drugs. Do you have any stomach problems?

That is real interesting. I do have GERD and take Prilosec for it. I have had it for years due to a hianal hernia.

I've had six sinus surgeries and I'm possibly facing another.

Having said that, however, you have to keep in mind that sinus problems are one of the most common chronic conditions around. Sinus issues probably rank only behind lower back pain in terms of the number of people chronically affected. So just because you have sinus problems and Crohn's doesn't mean that the sinus problems are because you have Crohn's. Tons of people have sinus problems without having Crohn's.

There are a couple of caveats to that. First, in rare cases, people can actually have Crohn's-like inflammation in their sinuses (as opposed to the more common types of inflammation seen with chronic sinusitis). Secondly, being on immunosuppressants can increase your likelihood of having sinus issues, so there can be a correlation there.

Oh, I forgot to mention: A couple of years ago I did some online searching for studies relating chronic sinusitis to Crohn's disease. I found one study. It found that people with Crohn's disease had a slightly higher likelihood of also having chronic sinusitis than people who don't have Crohn's disease. But then it went on to say that the study didn't separate people on immunosuppressants from those where were not on them, so it could be that the small difference found was simply from the Crohn's immunosuppressant meds leading to more sinus infections.

Immunosupressants are putting down the immune defency. Being severe sick is also putting down the immune defency.

Having Crohns means having BIG time lack of vitamins, minerals and all antioxidants that the body needs to keep on going. A lack of a balanced nutrition leads to a lack of our good protectors. We will therefor develope sinuses and a lot of other diseases due to not eating right.
Have also learned that eating gluten free, means avoiding all grains, flours like wheat, barley, rye and oats may reduce the Crohns activity and will also reduce other diseases activity due to an improvement re Crohns.

Getting a better immune defence is of great value, Low Dose Naltrexone is giving a way better immunity, and will often bring us to a remission with no inflammations in the intestines.

So for me, that is the combo that works, LDN and going gluten free. // BEE
