Admitted to hospital last night for emergency drainage surgery.

Hey guys. Bad news is that I'm in an extremely bad flare up. I developed a HUGE abscess in a matter of days. The size of a golf ball to be precise. I went to the doctor yesterday to get it checked out. He immediately sent me over to colorectal who then decided to admit me for the night. He preformed the surgery the same night and I left earlier today. Now, this is the first time that I had just an abscess and not a fistula. I know I have to pack it. I need some advice for those of you have done this before. Holy heck it hurts so bad to pack!!! I mean the pain resembles the pain the actually abscess was causing. How long do you usually pack it for? How long until the pain went away. Thanks for the advice!

The best advice is to call the surgeon's office and ask about packing instructions and wound care. They should have gone over this with you prior to your discharge. The size, location, depth, etc all effect wound care instructions.

Bosnianboy I know how you feel I had a horrible abscess like that too and it was drained one time with something like a vacuum cleaner and another, less painfully they scooped it out by hand. (nice job for someone!) afterwards I had the wound dressed every day by a nurse then after i was discharged by a district nurse - not sure if you have them in the US. Sometimes it was so painful I had to have a pain killer before dressing the wound. I would be horrified to have to do it myself.

They said it was very important that it healed up from the bottom up. You don't want the top to heal over while you still have a wound underneath. They used a dressing made of manuka honey which is very good preventing infection which is the main problem. From day to day the dressings were less and less painful and the wound gradually healed over.

I don't normally like taking painkillers or any medication really, but this is one time when I think its 100% justified
