Hello People,

I am writing as would like people to get into contact if they have had similiar problems. I have been diagnosed with Crohns 3 1/2 years i have had lots of operations for perianal abscesses and have had a bowel resection last september, none of this procedures have helped my condition at all! I take 75mg of Mercaptopurine and have been taking that for the last 5 months, to be honest i dont feel its doing anything. Since last Thursday i have been suffering with swallon joints, these are extremely painful, i wondered whether anybody had also had these problems when being on Mercaptopurine, i thought maybe as ibve been taking it for a while and not being feeling any different maybe my body is now intolerant to the drug    confused

Hi, Mercaptopurine is only effective for some people and you can usually tell after about 3 months whether it works for you. It is also not the ideal drug for preventing and healing perianal fistulas. I am going through that right now as well. I have not taken this drug but was advised to start humira or remicade which is better at fixing these. You should definitely talk to your doctor about trying a different med. Hope this helps! Yeah the drs did say that i would notice a difference if it works for me in 3 months, but unfortunaltly havent noticed anything different. I suffer from perianal crohns too, and it is horrible, i have 3 setons in place that are draining abscesses at the moment, these are horrible as have to wear sanitary towels all the time, i get paranoid of the smell, such a horrible thing to go through whem im still quite young. I had infliximad and have 4 infusions then on my 5th i had an allergic reaction, i am currently waiting for my gastro-nurse to refer me for humira.

6MP has worked really well for me, but I know, as Labradorite says, that it doesn't work for everybody. If you're still having resections, abscesses, and flares, then you can make a pretty good case that 6MP is not working for you. I think you need to have a long, serious talk with your GI to explain your feelings and to find out if there are other options that may work better for you. Write your questions and concerns down in advance, so that you don't get flustered, rushed, or steered off the track. If your GI can't give you some good, honest answers about what you're going through, then it may be time to find another doctor.
