Has anyone ever had normal formed BMs after a resection?

I had a resection done due to twisted colon. Though I have Crohn's, the twist was unrelated. After about 2 months (probably once insides were healed). I had my first what is considered "normal BM". It had been so long since I had, that it actually freaked me out. So in answer to your question "yes", if the Dr. say a normal BM will happen, I believe that it will. Hope this helps.

PS Tell your cousin not to get too discouraged at first. It really takes about 6 - 8 weeks for the insides to heal.

Short story: The last 3 feet of the ileum (small intestine) are called the terminal ileum. It is in the terminal ileum that most of the bile salts are removed before the chyme is dumped into the cecum followed by the colon via the ileocecal valve. The cecum and to an even greater degree the colon are more sensitve to bile salts. Excessive bile salts in the colon irritate it and tend to reduce its effectiveness in removng water from stool.

The greater the length of TI lost the greater the risk of loss of efficiency in reducing the amount of bile salts.

Good news?? There are products to aid in the absorption of bile salts in the intestines and thus reduce or eliminate the resulting bile salts caused diarrhea.

I have about 5 feet removed in the TI area and without 3 immodium a day I would be like a faucet. Even with 3 immodium I still do not have properly formed stools, but it def helps. Tell her not to stess, there are ways to cope!!
